I don't usually enter this quiz because I rarely know more than 4 or 5 answers but this month we got the first 9 so we're having a go.

Well I've tried a few names, Vivien Leigh, Claire Bloom (who is jewish), Valerie Hobson, Elsa Lanchester, Glynis Johns and Madeleine Carroll, and the only one with Irish descent of these was Madeleine, but she made her debut with a touring company...so those can at least be ruled out.

I'm am also on the answer's trail. I'm concentrating on what the question DOES''T say.
It says "Hollywood award" - not Oscar It says "actress" but not what period she is from It says "Irish descent" but not what country she is from. EDIT: although it does say the stage debut was in London.
So, I've been checking out some recent movie stars with Irish ancestry. So far you can rule out Saoirse Ronan, Anne Hathaway, Anna Kendrick, and Evanna Lynch. But I'm still thinking. Wheels are turning. I can practically hear the sounds of the chains and ball bearings. Stand by.

Possibility:
Greer Garson. Wiki says, “Greer Garson's early professional appearances were on stage, starting at Birmingham Repertory Theatre.” Irish heritage on her mother’s side. Anybody got her biography for more detail? But would there have been ANY Jewish characters on the London stage in the 1930s?
Not Judi Dench. Irish on mother’s side. London stage premiere in Twelfth Night

London stage premiere in Twelfth Night BINGO ! OldAussie By age 24, Garson decided to take a risk and try a full-time acting career. She was accepted by the Birmingham Repertory, making her first stage appearance as an American Jewish tenement girl in Street Scene.
