Not quite sure how to describe what I would think of as a typical haunting song or melody, other than in which for me they tend to create or come with something that is a bit more special or powerful in how to bring up certain images and emotions within.
But I do think the ones that goes a bit "deeper", often includes a heavy layer of some very atmospheric, hypnotnic or dreamlike sounds to them, and while some might be considered sad or painful, others might be more romantic, naive or hopeful.
Anyway, I think these two are a fitting way to start it up with. One captures a certain feverish dreamlike sound, I guess hypnotic or majestic could also be a way of putting it, but the film is elevated up to another level due to the beautiful music by Popol Vuh, and Aguirre: The Wrath of God (1972):
The other is surely a much more dark and brooding track, maybe not a big surprise, since it is a Joy Division song after all. But yeah, this one hit hard along with Decades, when I first heard the entire album back in fall of 2005:

Dead Can Dance - Dawn of the Iconoclast I haven't really gotten to check up on more of their music, but I do own Into the Labyrinth (1993), and I guess having heard some others through movie scores and such. Anyway, thanks Cypher for bringing up Dead Can Dance. Speaking of the band and the mentioned album, my favorite cut has to be the last song on it, How Fortunate The Man With None, which sounds at times not too unlike the minimalistic synth score that of which from John Carpenter and Alan Howarth and Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982).

I guess it is hard to leave out so much emotional and suspenseful music from Twin Peaks and Angelo Badalamenti along with Julee Cruise, but the first ones that I think sums up what I am on the look out for, are these:

The tune Margot Robbie's character plays at the end of the film Z for Zachariah (2015) I remember finding 'haunting'. I guess it is hard to leave out so much emotional and suspenseful music from Twin Peaks and Angelo Badalamenti along with Julee Cruise, but the first ones that I think sums up what I am on the look out for, are these: That's^ definitely a tune I found haunting as soon as I first heard it (though, unlike most, I never watched the show the tune was used in and only heard it on the radio). While oftentimes 'haunting' songs tend to be 'slower' songs, occasionally I'll stumble across ones that are a bit more 'faster' and still have a 'creepy' vibe about them.

In 1976 two Sydney-based nuns recorded "Fire of God's Love," an album that has since developed an international cult following. This track is actually just called "Fire" but many places erroneously list it as "Fire of God's Love."

Thanks for the videos DrKrippen. I had never heard that John Foxx track before, kind of gotten myself "stuck" with the 70s and 80s music, both from his own solo releases, but also through his period with Ultravox. Anyway, have often thought about checking upon the Cathedral Ocean albums, not sure how many there are made, but I think parts of them were already in the making back in the 80s, when his attempt on maybe a more commercial approach, seemed to end up in more atmospheric or ambient music. While Metamatic might be the better record, I do prefer his follow up with The Garden, which has a much richer, warmer and varied sound to it, and where the title cut has always been a huge favorite of mine. David Sylvian is another that I have often been meaning to look further into his albums, and even though I do own a couple of his earlier ones. I should probably head back to Brilliant Trees, which was the one that got me into buying them in the first place.

Herb Alpert - The Factory There is something strangely familiar in certain of the sounds and style of your latest post cypher. Cannot quite put it down where I have heard it, maybe not the exact same track, but yeah, most likely from either a movie or a tv-show. Anyway, thanks for putting it up.
