Curse of the Demon is a very good adaption of M.R. James' classic short story Casting the Runes.

Hmm, no that doesn't look familiar. Terrifying! That would have traumatized me, but I don't remember it. I specifically remember a lanky skeleton walking down a hallway or through a room or something. Oh, a vat of acid? Sound familiar? House on the Haunted Hill (1959)? I'm not sure why it hasn't been mention yet, it's very good.

The Quatermass Xperiment (1955) and especially Quatermass II (1957), which is a masterpiece in my opinion. By far the scariest, most unnerving black & white sci-fi horror.
Also I'd like to second The City of the Dead (1960) which has never really received the recognition it deserves.
