Season 1 -- it was short and they were still finding their way. Some of the MOTW episodes were cringe-worthy. The early character development was good but not as good as later (longer) seasons. I did like the arc with the Master (though it was more campy and corny than the story arc of later big bads).
There is one point about season 1 which I don't think I have seen made before. With the name Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I automatically expected a very campy show. I saw the movie first and one of its biggest problems was that it was very schizoid in its approach -- some elements were very campy, some characters, such as Buffy, were played very seriously, and a lot of the time I don't even know what they were trying to do. The series never really got that campy and, as much as I like camp, I was glad -- when it was funny, it was generally due to wit, and when it dealt with the incredible (demons, vampires, magic, etc.) it was generally quite serious. It very rarely made fun of itself. Season 1, however, was probably the campiest season of the lot (e.g. some of the Master's grandiose speeches) and it cements in my mind why they made the right decision to move away from that. I won't say that the later seasons lacked any campiness whatsoever but it was used more as a condiment than a main course.

Definitely season 6. Nothing connected with me this season. Also a lot of characters were very unlikable this season.

Season 7. I despise the Potentials, Andrew, the entire message of Chosen and several other flamingly hypocritical messages that go against everything Buffy stood for in the earlier seasons.
Season 4 is my runner up.

A tie between Season 4 and Season 6.

Season 7. There's far too much focus on Buffy needing Spike.

I saw the movie first and one of its biggest problems was that it was very schizoid in its approach -. Heads up Schizoid personality disorder (SPD) is a personality disorder characterized by a lack of interest in social relationships, a tendency towards a solitary or sheltered lifestyle, secretiveness, emotional coldness, and apathy. Affected individuals may be unable to form intimate attachments to others and simultaneously demonstrate a rich, elaborate and exclusively internal fantasy world.[1][2]. 706

Season 7. There's far too much focus on Buffy needing Spike. Was that the season they got it on in an alley by the dumpster? I was out at that point.

Season 5 is my least favorite. Glory is an interesting villain, but there's just so much other stuff going on in the season that I didn't care for. I just felt it was too dark and brooding. I'm sure that's what a lot of fans like about it, but my preferences are different. Season 4 has the weakest villain, which is one reason why I think it often gets ranked so low, but it's actually one one of my favorites (after the first two seasons, of course) because it had a good balance between being serious and comedic.

Though worse I felt was the scene in the balcony at the Bronze. Another one to add would be the scene when the house literally falls down while they're doing it, which occurs after they were beating each other up first. It still baffles me that there are Spuffy fans who love those scenes. I find them gross and degrading. It seems to be the Buffy version of a toxic/abusive relationship, and I get sick of seeing people romanticizing it.

It absolutely is down right horrific. That relationship was built on violence. It does have the unfortunate implications that a man who is abusive (physically and emotionally) can still change. That's a terrible message to send out to viewers.

Season 6. Whedon left the show in other people's hands and they ruined it. The Nerd trio as villains, the depressing storylines, Xander leaving Anya, the rape scene, the Willow BS. And worst of all, all the Buffy and Spike fanservice. I'm fairly sure the stuff Buffy did this season is partially why Sarah Michelle Gellar left the show.

Season 4 is my least favorite season. While I love some of the episodes (This Years Girl, Who Are You, Something Blue, Fear, Itself, Hush), the overall season, I feel, is weak (this could be because it comes off of 2 incredibly strong seasons). The Initiative story was good in theory. I like the idea that the military knew of the supernatural world, but it was not executed correctly. Same thing with Adam. I liked the idea of Adam, but he was poorly executed too. The season was a transitionary season which did not help, although I think it did help the story at points such as in The Freshman where Buffy feels lost and everything is completely new. I didn't like that Giles and Xander did not have a lot to do this season and were not as interesting. I did not like Prof. Walsh and her superior attitude (love the actress though), and how the climax of the season was almost more about Riley (and Walsh) than about Buffy and the Scoobies. I loved the concept of Giles, Willow, and Xander merging with Buffy to take out a villain, but not for Adam. They should have used that for Glory or the First/Caleb. Even though it is my least favorite season of Buffy, it is still a much better season than a lot of shows today.
