Which movies have been the biggest mobie events of your lifetime, when talking about the hype surrounding it and the amount of people that watched it and talked about it. Here's a top 5 of the biggest movie events in the Netherlands during my lifetime based on my experience. Unfortunately I was just too young for LoTR in 2001 - 2003, but from other people I've heard that it was huge and perhaps the biggest movie event besides #1 on this list:
HM: Skyfall, Frozen, Pirates of the Caribbean 3 & 4, The Hobbit trilogy
5. Avengers: Infinity War I know it's only a few days old, but this movie is huge. The cinema I went to was packed and everyone's talking about it. Easily the most hyped MCU movie, 2nd would be Avengers from 2012.
4. Jurassic World I never expected this movie to be this succesful. It was very succesful in the US, but with a foreign gross of over 1 billion this movie was an gigantic event over here. It wasn't just popular for 1 or 2 weeks. People were talking about it all summer. While JW2 might not make record breaking figures in thr US, I think it will do very well overseas based on the hype of the first JW. People just love dinosaurs.
3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 For me this is one of the best memories of my childhood. HP was big domestically, but I have a feeling that the hype in Western Europe was a lot bigger. Besides Star Wars the HP franchise is probably the most popular franchise here that's still going (yes even more popular than marvel). Even 7 years after its release, people are still talking about HP regularly.
2. Star Wars: The Force Awakens Of course. I can still remember sitting in a sold out theater (which almost never happens where I go to the cinema) and hearing the first note of the Star Wars theme. Instant goosebumps. I think this movie was even bigger in the US so I think everyone knows what I'm talking about, but the hype surrounding it was enormous.
1. Avatar No question the biggest movie event of my lifetime and even though I haven't lived through the entire 20th century, perhaps even the biggest movie event of all-time in the Netherlands. Like holy shit, this was huge. It's still the only time that we wanted to book tickets to the cinema and that everything was sold out. And this is a cinema where I was still able to get tickets for Infinity War on Friday a few hours before the movie. I can still remember my viewing of the movie. The theater was packed and people were cheering (which never happens usually). Because of that it's probably still my favorite theater experience. I know many people in the US feel that Avatar is forgotten, but here in Europe I don't get that feeling at all. Avatar was popular in the US with 760M domestic, but this movie made more than 2 billion overseas. That's about twice as much as TFA made overseas. In Europe and the Netherlands, this was an event of Star Wars 77 proportions. I haven't seen a movie hype like this ever again and it's also the reason why I'm confident that Avatar 2 will be a big succes.
What are the biggest movie events of your lifetime in your state, country etc.? It seems really interesting to hear other people's stories about movie events.

The Phantom Menace had the most hype ever for a film that will likely never be topped.

I would say (I'm in the UK) Phantom Menace The Force Awakens Avengers: Infinity War Maybe the Lord Of The Rings trilogy Empire Strikes Back was pretty big, but this was pre-internet/mass media...I could imagine with those around it would have been massive. Not sure about Avatar...I remember a lot of hype about the 3-D and I remember a lot of people around me going to see it. I also remember none of them being particularly amazed by it Personally not all these were big events for me personally (I hated Phantom Menace and Avatar), but big cinema events generally. Up until the 90s it was pretty common that big US movies would not be released in Europe until about 6 months after the US release so Summer/Christmas block busters were seen in Europe at Christmas/Summer. That's six months of hype and buzz before a films release, so I'm sure there were some big event movies on this side of the Atlantic that weren't so much an event in the US

When Avatar came out, it was like: I saw it, didn't care much for it, moved on with my life, then heard it outgrossed Titanic and was like "...what?!" The hype just completely passed me by. I'd actually thought I heard it was flopping.
I guess there's only as much hype as you surround yourself with. As a teen who loved superhero movies, nothing comes close to The Dark Knight. From the epic trailer, to Heath Ledger's death, to the reviews. 2008 basically revolved around one movie for me.

Jurassic Park
Black Panther
The Force Awakens
Infinity War
Titanic
Honorable Mention: Independence Day
I would count Avatar but it would be after it's release when all the naysayers were silenced or we could laugh at them choking on their whiny tears.

I'd say the naysayers increased after it was released When it came out I was actually shocked by how many people around me went to see the film. In my office at the time there were about 30 people and about half went to see it in it's first 2 weeks. Then there were a lot of friends and family, many who hadn't been to the cinema for ages, went to see it. There also seemed to be a larger percentage than normal amongst those that frequented the website I used to moderate, who went to see it compared to most other new releases. What was really surprising (well not so much after I'd seen the film) was that I can only really recall a couple of people that thought the film itself was great - many were impressed by the 3-D, but not the actual film.

I don't think I knew so many people that went to repeated viewings of a movie or were pleasantly surprised by it.

The Phantom Menace was one of the most hyped films I can recall. What a let down. Especially after all the original films (4,5,and 6) were re-released (in special edition form) to theaters to help with the build up. I sat through that midnight screening and was completely bummed about Star Wars after that point.
The other film that I remember massive hype for was the '89 Batman film. Everyone had a Batman logo shirt. All sorts of merchandise and fast food tie ins were promoted. The Six Flag Theme Parks all were building Batman inspired rides. That one actually lived up to the hype.

If we are talking highly publicized films that I went to see then:
Superman the Movie The Empire Strikes Back Return of the Jedi Who Framed Roger Rabbit Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade Batman Terminator 2 Jurassic Park The Phantom Menace
Of the list, I think the PM had the most naturally occurring anticipation.
Batman was the most manufactured hype.
Terminator 2 and JP were mostly sold on their FX innovations.

Going back a ways, Thunderball. After Goldfinger turned James Bond into an international phenomenon, everyone in the world and his brother were waiting with baited breath for the NEXT 007 film. The media covered the making of the film and pre-release hype was everywhere. It's no surprise that Thunderball is the highest grossing (adjusted for inflation) Bond film of all time.

Jurassic Park - For people of my generation, this was our Star Wars/Raiders of the Lost Ark. We all loved dinosaurs and for the first time, seeing real-looking dinosaurs onscreen was truly a spectacle on the big screen. I remember my friends and I watching the film countless times, reading Chrichton's novel and playing all the video games. I still feel it holds up as a popcorn blockbuster done right.
The Phantom Menace - It had been sixteen years since Return of the Jedi and the official announcement of the prequels had all of us SW fans eagerly anticipating Episode I. This was also when the Internet had become more available in everyone's daily lives, so following the daily updates on the film online made this film special like no other. I still remember the excitement surrounding the trailer, the long lines to see the film, the merchandising, the toys, video games, etc.
Then of course, the film opened and was seen as a disappointment, but as a major film event, it has yet to be matched in the 19 years since.
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003) - All three films were eagerly anticipated and talked about during their release.

Star Wars Episode I-III Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy All the Harry Potter films The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Christopher Nolan's Batman Trilogy Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
The hype and anticipation for The Force Awakens wasn't big, IMO. The only people who were excited for it were passionate George Lucas/Prequel haters, the MCU crowd and people who eat up everything with the Disney brand name on it and people who love mindless cynical nostalgia pandering like TFA. Most real Star Wars fans and and pretty any sane human being knew it wouldn't be good.
The only reason people loved it is because we now live in a age our standards for what makes a good film are so incredibly low and because people are absolute sheep and don't know what makes a good film a good film anymore.

1. The Phantom Menace. Coming off the hugely successful Special Edition theatrical releases, bringing SW back into the fore, the anticipation for -new- SW was beyond anything. Went with a friend to 3am opening day showing wanting to see it as soon as possible while avoiding prime time crowds, watched ESB at home right before. 10/10 hype metre
2. The Force Awakens. Again, -new- SW amps the hype metre, esp when we were never expecting more new SW ever again. Watched this 8am opening day, again skipping prime showings the night prior. Having popcorn at 9am was weird. 9/10 hype
3. LOTR:ROTK. It's lore that I knew nothing of FOTR other than its release date & a few still shots. Watched FOTR IMAX cuz why not. Changed my cinematic life. TTT teaser I remember being an event. ROTK was to be the epic. Went on a whim after work opening night cuz originally scared away by usual prime maddening crowds... caved & why not. 8/10 hype
4. Avatar 3D. Titanic scale + sci-fi angle, & this was it. The 3D was spectacular, the 3D awakening on the ship was pristine & a gamechanger. Taking off the 3D glasses as credits rolled felt like I was leaving my very own Avatar experience. 7/10 hype
5. Infinity War. Never a huge MCU standalone fan, The Avengers was more a welcome turn than anticipation. IW however being a culmination of 10 year, 18 films in the making is unavoidable. I saw it this past Monday 2pm cuz no way wanted wkend crowd madness. 7/10 hype
