I'm a Marxist through and through (but, like some others who have posted, Stan and Ollie gave me pause before I picked my one choice allowed).

So why is Monty Python not on the list? or the cast and writers of The Goon Show for that matter. Those are some classic comedy teams. Or is this just about film comedy?

The Marx Brothers but only the movies from the thirties and preferably the ones without the sappy love stories.

Peter Cook and Dudley Moore – second only to the Marx Brothers. For me second only to...well no one. Maybe Laurel & Hardy

Here’s that Penn and Teller (well, more accurately, just Teller) trick that’s pure Stan Laurel.
Compare that with 28:35-28:53 here.

The Marx Bros, hands down. I sometimes do my own "marathons," and feast on their films over a couple of days. For a few years, my favorite way to spend New Year's Eve is with "Minnie's Boys," and some "bubbly."
When I was little, I enjoyed Laurel and Hardy, and Abbott and Costello. I haven't seen any of their films for years, so I should watch, again, to see if they've held-up, for me. They probably have, but probably nothing like the Marx Bros..
The Three Stooges never appealed to me. And, I've heard it said that their fan base is far greater among men, than women. Growing up, my brothers thought that they were hilarious. But, I can only watch people poking each-other in the eyes, tweaking each-other's noses, and executing head slaps, for a short period of time, before it gets old. I do have to give them credit for meticulous timing. Fast paced physical comedy can't be easy.
From childhood, I'd give the Our Gang Comedies and 8, out of 10. Again, I should take another look at them, too.
As for the newer fellows, I love Python. We've opined on what constitutes "classic," on this board many times. I would vote to give them "classic" status for Holy Grail and Life of Brian, given their years of working as a team (albeit, mostly for TV), and for the nature of the subject matter for both films.
