I love this show. I used to watch all the new episodes weekly as a kid. I still watch re-runs on "Hallmark Channel" and I feel it holds up today because it's character driven comedy so it's not as dated as "Rosanne" or "Married with Children" that used a lot of references from culture to make jokes.
That being said there is one thing that has always bugged me, Jill.
Jill is always putting Tim down. She is always pointing out how stupid or moronic he is, even in front of the kids. That's so wrong to me. I know it's just a sitcom, but he's the head of the house. It's not like this is some bum who won't get a job and she's supporting her 3 kids. HE IS THE BREADWINNER. He created a popular local TV show, he literally does everything for her.
Look at the difference between them. If Tim says something offensive, it's usually out of ignorance because he's not thinking. For example, he might make some comment about her dress making her look fat, but he didn't mean to be offensive he meant it's not flattering. So his comments are usually not mean spirited, in fact, I can't think of a time when Tim purposely tried to hurt Jill.
However, Jill is mean to Tim all the time. In fact, everyone in the house disrespects Tim except Brad. If Jill is supposedly the more intelligent one, she should be more mature. Randy even moves away with that "I'm better than you" attitude for this 'blue collar/hard working" family. Mark is a Mama's Boy and is too busy doing whatever she wants or siding with her. So Brad is the only one who is similar to Tim, they relate. And it's sad because Tim does EVERYTHING and anything for that family. He bends over backwards for Jill and the kids, only to be disrespected and treated like a buffoon in his own home.
The irony is, Tim would NEVER cheat or betray Jill, he's too loyal, but she would. If given the right circumstances, the right place, right time, right guy, she would. Tim is too loyal to his wife and kids. Jill is that person who is never satisfied, shes a house wife so shes always seeking a career, or education, or meaning/purpose to life. People like that will cheat because they start trying to fill a void or hole in their life. Tim is content, he's happy with his job/career. wife, kids, home, etc... He is fulfilled.
The ultimate irony of the show is the people who are quote 'smarter' and more 'enlightened' than Tim aren't as happy as Tim. Tim is fulfilled. Al is a nervous wreck of personalty anxieties due to his self conscious issues, Jill is unsure of herself and feels inadequate, Randy too, Wilson has his own set of issues. Tim is the hero of the story.

As far as the wife/husband relationship, this was a trend that still continues today. The idiot moron husband and the "voice of reason" wife.

Ha ha ha. That's cute. The middle is just as brainwashed. Only about different things.
In any case, yes, Jill put down her husband who constantly tried to use his masculinity to get his way and then ended up trashing the house costing them who knows how much money in the process.

But, he was the sole breadwinner. He has the right to make those decisions, right or wrong. It's his job as a TV repairman host and successful brand "Tool Time' that got them that house. I see Jill as a jaded housewife. She got pregnant young, stayed at home, didn't know what she wanted to do with her life, used kids as an excuse why she is 'stuck'. Then once her youngest boy is old enough, she goes on this path of 'rediscovery' and doesn't know who she is. The sad reality is, outside of this 'sitcom' in real life these two would get a divorce. They married too young and it's not Tim's fault, it's not Jill's fault. Too many times we 'settle' with someone because thats what society expects us to do. Jill unfairly blames Tim because shes actually too afraid to look in the mirror and see her own failures and faults.

The show does not take place in the 1950's. It's a marriage in the 1990's. Money is the responsibility of both parties, not just the bread winner. After all, that money wasted on repairing the house could've been used for the kids. New clothes. A car. College fund.
Not to mention, Jill wants to work. She mentions in the very first episode how she was passed up for a job. So she is looking. And of course, she does go on to college to earn her degree. Which is what we want everyone to do.
And they didn't settle. Despite their differences, they loved and supported each other.

Best part of the show was easily Wilson and his quirky quotes of wisdom to help Tim or Jill fix a problem. The running gag of never showing his lips was creative. Especially the one where he was directing Randy's high school play and they kept moving him around...and you still didn't see his face. The premise of the show was good as well. Working dad, mom that wants to work/go to school, boys that try activities in school, people held responsible when they screwed up, a very good show.

I despised it. Canned midwestern corn. A NASCAR family from the north.

I agree that it started a tired trend, but back then it still felt fresh and Jill was right a lot of the time. And unlike today's shows I felt that there was also a lot of love and respect between them.

I can't believe you actually said something I agree with, mello. I don't agree that they settled for each other, but yeah, Jill was often too mean-spirited. I get that Tim is supposed to be a bumbling loveable goof, but they shouldn't have made him "wrong" all the time. That said, other than that, it was a great show. It also captured what its like to be the younger of a set of children perfectly.
