I've been playing the superb Don Bluth laserdisc video games "Dragon's Lair" and "Space Ace" so that got me on an animation kick from that time period. I never liked Bluth's Secret of NIHM, so I gave it another look and I still find it boring other than the great looking animation. Next, I rewatched Disney's The Black Cauldron. The Horn King is cool, but every good guy character is bland and the story is weak to non existent. Interestingly John Hurt voiced The Horn King and Tim Burton was an animator. Both movies had potential but ended up feeling half baked.

I liked The Black Cauldron, but mainly for the visuals, the Horned King, and Elmer Bernstein's musical score. The personalities of the leading heroes weren't that well-written, and there was no reason for Eilonwy to be called a princess if we don't see her kingdom or it doesn't play into the story. There was potential for an awesome dark fantasy epic somewhere in that film, but I'm glad Disney is going to give it another chance.

If you want to see a dark movie yet that is really good with good animation, check out Wizards if you haven't already.

I think it's under seen and underrated. A big part of why I like it so much is because of the characters. Gurgi is awesome.

As a kid, I wound up reading the final book in the Prydain series and liked it.

Do you think this movie is trying to be like those cult 80s fantasy films like The Dark Crystal, The Last Unicorn, Secret of NIMH or those adult animated fantasy films like Heavy Metal, Fire and Ice, Wizards, Ninja Scroll etc.?

It certainly isn't the best written film, but I think it is an entertaining movie with fun and likable characters, Some cool world building, a memorable villain and a good score.
The Last Unicorn has some of the same strengths and weaknesses.

I like Siskel and Ebert's review of the movie. Ebert liked it and Siskel didn't.

space cadet Lindsey used to bring this up on the old imdb often. That was before he turned into a jerk.

When this came out it scared the crap out of me. I was about 9 I think and saw it at an older movie theater that still had a large screen (remember in the '80s all those 1 screen theaters were converting to 3 or even 4 screens in place of the one big one). I did end up buying the Scholastic comic book adaption at my elementary school book fair though. That scene with the Horned King viewing the dungeon full of all of his skeletal warriors before he obtains the black cauldron was chilling. I agree that Taran was pretty weak as a main hero though. Gurgi was pretty fun as the typical "comic" relief. The three witches were pretty menacing as well. I don't think "new" Disney would be as evil in a remake nowadays. It would be made more child friendly for sure, I think.

It would be nice to get a director's cut with all the deleted scenes inserted back in. The movie used to be a lot darker.

The villains looked great and truly menacing, but that's about the only thing the film had going for it. Not a fan.
