One of the characters from the prequels makes a short appearance in this film. Bail Organa played by jimmy smits.

Well, there's a few things from the prequels that are included in the film, for instance Genevieve O'Reilly plays the character she played in ROTS in this film, although her scenes were cut from ROTS, so an appearance from Mr Smits doesn't feel weird to me.

Another thing I can't figure out is why is her name princess leia organa, and then you got bail organa from the prequel films. Are they related? Why is their last name the same?

Bail Organa adopted Leia and she was given the surname Organa, quite common with adoptions.

As does Vader hibernating on Mustafar. Smits really only there for visual cues & whatnot, it also gives a small dose of gravitas to the PT. |

There is a more prequel stuff like that:
vehicles (see the Juggernaut transport-tank that they use at the beginning)
world bulding: see Coruscant and the castle on Mustafar
the actress who played Mon Mothma was in EpIII (mostly cut so she is reduced to an extra performance)

This movie really was the perfect bridge between the prequels and original trilogy.
Shame that the sequel trilogy probably won't get something like that.
