H-8 is a celebrated Croatian melodrama directed by Nikola Tanhofer. It is based on a real-life story about a fatal collision caused by unidentified truck driver in 1957. H-8 were the initial characters of their registration plates and the only information about the perpetrator. This cult achievement by Nikola Tanhofer about the unresolved mystery from the highway is unique for its structure and contemporary thematics, also signifying the introduction of a modern film genre in Yugoslav cinema.
H-8 begins with an overture, almost documentarily display of an accident, where the viewer is informed about the particulars. At the very beginning we learn how many people are going to die, where the victims were seated, which vehicles took part in a crash, time of the crash and even on what kilometer of the highway did the accident took place. However, we don't immmediately learn who were the victims and this is precisely where the tensity derives from, considering the passengers are constantly switching their seats. The story is further built through careful balance between the characters and their stories, allowing us to become invested in them by introducing us to their ambitions and dreams, their past and present.
H-8 is an impressive film, with slight touches of Italian neorealism ( Bicycle Thieves references ) but unmistakeble Croatian identity. It won 1958 Pula Film Festival and is today recognized as one of the best Croatian films of all time. It is also considered highly innovative for its time, both from technical and storytelling perspective.
If anyone is feeling adventurous, H-8 is available on YouTube with english subtitles.

Thanks delon... A wonderful Yugoslavian Classic !!, it is interesting to note that the concept and screenplay was jointly authored by Zvonimir Berkovic. The writers directing debut film feature, Rondo (1966) is an excellent, modernist psychological drama, the award winning film is also considered to be one of the best and original Yugoslavian classic films...

I recently rewatched Rondo (1966) , as it was being shown on TV and I was lucky enough to catch it from the beginning. Truly great film and one of my personal favorites. Really impressive how director Berkovic was able to put his musical background to work, using musical form as a narrative structure of a film.

After reading (and bookmarking) your excellent post Delon (and seeing manfromplanetx praise for it) this has been a film I've been meaning to catch for over a year, but just kept missing the chance to. Digging into Eastern European cinema this month,I at last got on the bus, (thanks for link to Eng Subs version) and wow, what a superb film. Following your comments about the attention-grabbing opening,I found that opening with the crash gave the extended flashback an incredibly ominous mood, due to the unfolding personal dramas of the passengers taking place with them being unaware that their lives are about to hit a wrong turn. With the "real time" Thriller-style set-up also bringing a countdown of doom to proceedings, this is a movie I think hitchcockthelegend would enjoy Thanks for highlighting this great film Delon!

I shall catch this while still available. Many thanks!
Your description of the prologue reminds me of the opening of The Bridge of San Luis Rey (2004) dir: Mary McGuckian. Any resemblance?
