"Quick thinking landed him a million bucks... now everybody's after it!"
11 year old Preston Waters (Brian Bonsall) is like most kids at his age. He likes to dream big, wants more freedom and to be able of living life like it was a permant holiday. And his dream is about to become a reality when he gets involved in an accident with some local crooks on the run after a successful robbery and they end up destroying his bike.
Preston is then amazed when their leader hands him a blank check, in which he thanks to some rather handy computer skills succeeds to cash out.
As an result, the young man soon ends up taking on a brand new identity as the eccentric Macintosh and who is now the proud new owner of a million dollars in cash.
But spending a lot of money in a short period of time do not always pay off in a good way, as it will bring with it unwanted attention and bigger problems, specially when the former owners of the money wants it back, and to make things even more complicated the FBI are also interested in locating the lost money as well.
I should probably have seen this film again before I started up this thread, as it sadly have happened a few times too many that films I loved watching over and over again as a kid do not always live up to my childhood nostalgia, but what the hell.
Blank Check aka Blank Cheque was one of those fantastic movies I must have seen at least 4-5 times or more during the hot summer of 1994.
In norway the film went under the title of Kuult med Cash or in english Cool with Cash, which I actually thought the norwegian alternative title sounded much better than the original one, which is not often do happens.
Anyway, the reason to why I saw it as frequently might also be to the fact that I was living in a very small town or place, so the local cinema might not have the most impressive variaty when it came to movies, but I did not care much or complained as it was the "perfect" summer vacation movie for kids in my age, and since I saw it that much, I always thought it must have done very well at the box office all over the world.
Strangly I never captured the original movie title, just went on by the norwegian one which would be a problem when I later on asked for it if any movie stores had it on VHS or DVD many years later.
One day, I "stumbled" upon a DVD copy which had the exact same movie poster as I remembered from my childhood but this time released under the title of Blank Cheque.
I decided to pick it up and it turned out to be the movie I had hoped it would be, sadly nostalgia was not on my side this time and I thought the film was more mediocre than great but this is at least 14-15 years ago.
Looking back, I guess it was just one of many Home Alone rip-offs but one which brought a lot of joy and happiness for my sake and along with Free Willy (1993) stands out as two of my most beloved childhood family movies.
