"When You Can't Believe Your Eyes, Trust Your Heart."On their way home from vacation, the Henderson's accidentally runs into a large and mysterious animal. But instead of just driving away in panic, they end up rescuing the hairy creature and decides that the safest choice is to bring him with them back home. Soon, it turns out that they will have to make room for far more place as they have now gotten a brand new family member in Harry (Kevin Peter hall) and who is anything like his intimidating appearance. Sadly, that means very little for those who want to capture and exploit him, and pretty soon every gun crazed fanatic is on the trail of Harry and his new family and the only one who can put and end to it all is George Henderson (John Litgow).Once more, a big childhood favorite of mine, but I was far too young to see it at the cinemas when it was first out, however it was always on every summer during a period of 1991-1994 on TV as I remember and was one of my favorite summer movies see together with my family. Somehow when I re-watched it for the first time in years, I had forgotten much of it, maybe most that it had John Litgow in the main lead and since then I had gotten used to see him in more villainous/crazy roles, such as the great one in Cliffhanger or many other thrillers and action related movies, so seeing him in such a lighthearted movies did take my by surprise a bit, but in a positive way. Also the special effects was very impressive and I think it was Rick Baker who did most of them along with having Kevin Peter Hall (Predator) playing Harry. As a kid I always thought it was a early 90s release, might of course have something to do with the fact that the film had a TV show made after it, and I think also there were some trading cards, comic books and toys being sold in the period of 1990-1992, or so I remember.

I used to watch this movie all the time when I was real young, but have not seen it in a very long time and therefor can't really remember much of it (since my memory seems to get worse every day).
One thing that do always remember about this movie, though, is the scene where John Lithgow's character has to force Harry away/make him leave in the forest. He even hits him, I think - I remember that being a very sad scene to watch (and I think it's one of the first instances I can remember of that 'trope' where a character is seemingly 'mean' to another character but it's all in an effort to keep them 'safe').

Yeah there sure were some very good and heart warming scenes in this rather "goofy" family adventure movie, and I think Lithgow did a solid job here as well. I wonder if they ever thought about doing a sequel, but since the TV show came out a few years later, I guess that pretty much would not happen.

Lithgow is always good but I never cared much for this movie. Lithgow is one of those characters who, while freely admitting he's an excellent actor, I just don't care for him in most of the roles he plays. And this movie ends up less appealing IMHO because he's in it. The only role I like him in is 2010, The Year We Make Contact. He plays well opposite the other characters in that movie.
But we watched this movie several times back in the day.

That's interesting about Lithgow. He did CBS radio dramas in the early 70s (and the voice of Yoda in the radio Star Wars version). I liked his role in 2010 but I didn't care for his role in CLIFFHANGER. Could not put my finger on it but maybe the problem is he works better as a sympathetic normal character rather than a bad guy or nut (like in Twilight Zone the Movie)?
Haven't seen it in ages (and there was a tv series too). I liked the ending with all the bigfeet appearing out of nowhere in the forest. Kathleen Kennedy's sister appears as the newscaster in one scene.
