They were guards for the Jedi temple or something yes? Not Jedi, yet trained with the knowledge & appreciation of the Force.
I really like the characters. They're neither wallpaper nor superheroes.

There's not much to their characters though. Chirrut Imwe is little more than a stereotypical blind monk who's a martial arts master. Baze is an Asian dude with a big gun.

They're introduced midway, & both die. I think it would've been too Disney to spend more time & energy. I think that's one of R1's strengths, it doesn't doddle as much as TFA & TLJ, nor the prequels.

How is it "too Disney" to put some effort into writing decent, memorable characters? Rogue One had too many underdeveloped heroes that didn't leave much of an impression on me. Consequently, I didn't care when they died. Lando and Yoda didn't have a lot of screen time in ESB, yet they both left their mark.
