I'm a big fan of this epic about gunboat diplomacy starring Steve McQueen as Jake Holman, an engineer who likes machines more than people but can't avoid involvement in the larger political situation whether he wants it or not.

I do. It's another great Steve McQueen film. It's probably the first film where I saw Mako.

Hell yes I do. One of my favorites actually. I feel though it's severely overlooked nowadays despite being Steve McQueen's best movie.

It's a grand, impressive film, meticulously put together, beautifully acted. The leading players are perfect in their roles. One downside, and it's not a small one: the pacing is off. It's a smart, thoughtful movie, however its cerebral, pensive aspects slow it down. For some films a stately, slow paced quality can be a virtue. I don't think this is the case with The Sand Pebbles. Way above average, for all that; a near classic.

I mean one directed by him, not one he acted within.
