Interesting that. Doing a look around the interwebs, there's not a whole lot more information at hand than is contained in that article.
One thing I found is that somebody claiming to be one of the men's sister believes they got in to confrontation with another group in Chico, in which Mathias was killed. Which would mean:
-the remaining four fled in fear, or were chased, on to the mountain forest Road.
-explain why Mathias' remains were never found in connection with the others.
-why they fled in to the woods in panic when they heard Shone calling for help in the dark.
Only one possibility of many.
I guess we'll never know.

Nalkarj , Thank You for sharing that Very Interesting and Strange Story... It reminds me a little bit of the "Arnold Archambeau & Ruby Bruguier" case that was featured on the show "Unsolved Mysteries"... Two teens "disappear" after a car accident during the winter, only to have their bodies found at the same location the next spring.unsolvedmysteries.wikia.com/wiki/Arnold_Archambeau_and_Ruby_BruguierBoth cases raise A Lot of odd questions for either the "Accidental" or Foul Play theories,,, And neither case seems to have enough evidence to point to one theory or another. I can see why they both remain unsolved cases...
