WALK THE LINE came out a year after RAY and the same year the mini-series ELVIS did. They weren't just biopics about musicians; they were biopics about musicians who had addictions and cheated on their wives. Both this and ELVIS had Robert Patrick playing the protagonist's father and they both begin with the final concert before going back to the character's pre-fame life. Both this and RAY show the protagonist feeling guilty about his brother's death and they both have a scene of a producer telling him that he should try to find his own sound instead of someone else's. These are just some of the many details that highlight how formulaic this sub-genre can be (which is why WALK HARD: THE DEWEY COX STORY exists). That being said, this movie has a lot of genuinely intense and/or touching moments. There are also moments that, with other actors, would've been melodramatic. Luckily, Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon elevate them with their performances and chemistry. 8/10 ------------------------ You can read comments of other movies (including WALK HARD) in my blog (in English, in Spanish or in Italian).
