It was actually kinda stunning in 1976 when Rocky (SPOILER ALERT) didn't beat Apollo Creed in the first fight. Everybody kinda assumed it would go the other way.

SPOILER ALERT:
The Bad News Bears (1976). Of course the Bears were going to win the championship! Except they didn't, which made for a better ending. They didn't need to win to be the best team.

Silver Dream Racer (1980). Never saw that coming. No surprise they also had an alternate ending.

Creed. I saw a test screening, which had the predictable ending. I wrote on those surveys they give you that it was unrealistic, and they actually listened and changed the ending for the theatrical release.

I dunno -- I think the theatrical storyline of "Creed" as it turned out is kinda predictable too, since it is more or less a rehash of the plotline of the original "Rocky." (Mild spoiler!!) Really, going against the grain in the original "Rocky" meant almost any ending in any sequel was kind of predictable.
