The same exact script, would fans act like it was the best movie of all time?

Rian Johnson's directing abilities wasn't so much the problem with Episode 8 (I actually enjoyed his directing on Breaking Bad). The negative reception has to do with his writing than anything else.
No, I like Nolan but another director still couldn't make the words/ideas better unless he/she rewrote Johnson's script.

No because the problem with the film wasn't the directing it was the writing.
Nolan may get a good performance out of the cast, but he can't save a shitty script.
Now if he wrote AND directed The Last Jedi it would have been a superior Stat Wars film.

As much as I love Nolan, I don't think he could write a good second chapter in a trilogy he didn't start (especially this one).
He would need to write the entire trilogy, then direct them all himself for it to work.

Hmmm...He has co-written projects with his brother, which shows he can collaborate with others as far as writing is concerned. He hasn't written any sequels before though. Nor has he written anything started by others - outside of maybe considering Batman started by others even though he went his own direction with that trilogy. It would be an interesting undertaking for Nolan. He definitely is a pro in terms of "meeting his days" (finishing his project on time) and creating hit movies. Disney/Lucasfilm wouldn't have found themselves in the position where they had to fire him or anything like that. He would have been in charge of the set (much like it was rumored Ron Howard handled things once he came on board for Solo).

He had to deal with Goyer and Roven all the time. Like you said, he writes great stuff with his brother, too. Nolan has a very specific style for both filmmaking and storytelling. I don't think he could have made the best Star Wars movie he's capable of if he had to follow the footsteps of someone else (in this case JJ Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan). If he was given full creative control over all three movies in this Sequel Trilogy, then he could do something special. Of course I don't think he'd ever do it. Kennedy and company are a little more controlling than WB was back in the mid 2000s and early 2010s.
