Watching many Westerns on the Grit-TV channel since they revised their format in January, 2018, to concentrate on Western films. Also noticing some really goofball cliches in these classic Westerns, such as: 1. Character runs out of water in his canteen, and throws away the canteen in disgust. Hey, maybe there's a watering hole just around the corner? 2. Character runs out of bullets and throws his gun at the other gunfighter, who ducks. Does that make sense to just throw away your gun? Also, a gun is a lousy projectile to aim straight. 3. Character wants a drink of whiskey from a bottle in his pocket, and pulls out the cork with his teeth and spits it far away. So does he have a bunch of new corks sitting in his pocket to use?
4. Gang of dry cowboys come upon watering hole, and the first one there is always so stupid that he greedily takes a drink, then learns that it is poisoned. Dies a horrible death.
Some others you can think of?

Hmm, see a pattern of rampant littering developing.

All genres have their goofy cliches. My favorite western one is where 2 guys are having a "fast draw" and one guy gets his gun out first and the other guy some how sees this and is able to react so fast that he stops mid draw with his own gun half way out of the holster. Now even if your brain worked fast enough to notice that his gun is already out and stop yourself mid draw, why would you? Are you going to assume he won't shoot you? Do you even think the other guy's brain works fast enough to stop him from shooting? Wouldn't it be better to just draw and shoot anyway and hope his first shot misses?
And wouldn't the faster guy not wait to see if the other guy is going to stop when he sees that your gun is already out?

When I saw the topic for this thread, the first thing I thought of was “The Fastest Gun Alive” and my favorite shooting exhibition. As Glenn Ford stands in the town street shooting coins out of the air, the townspeople form in a circle around him. Ford is looking right at people when he draws and shoots. It looks like hitting a coin in the air makes bullets disappear.
This is like the scenes when the mob shows up at the jail demanding that the prisoner be handed over. The guy leading the mob will go for his gun. The brave Marshall will draw and shoot the gun out of the guy's hand. But all the people standing behind the mob leader don't even flinch. Where does the bullet go after it has hit the mob leader’s gun? The same place as when they hit coins, I guess.
In an episode of “The Rifleman,” Lucas McCain lines up a bunch of empty bottles on a hitching post and then, standing in the street, rapid fires his rifle, breaking all the bottles. Again, what happens to the bullets? The downtown building behind the hitching post should have been riddled with bullet holes and the proprietors extremely pissed, if not shot to death.

No matter how fast the horses and how desperate the chase ,despite the lack of a strap or string to hold them on, hats never fly off of heads ~ especially HERO'S HATS.

Unless for some sort of plot development or comedy relief ~ no one ever gets hit by a tree branch during chases.

None of the ladies, be they schoolmarm or saloongal, ever look rumpled or mussed. The busy house-wifey types may have a few stray damp curls to show that they have been hard at work washing and cleaning for their menfolk but usually, they too are bandbox neat and pressed.

That's back when they used to make bullets out of powdered sugar.

The sidekick often (not always) has a …. to put it kindly …. an unusual voice or way of talking. The sidekick's costuming is also usually a tad out of the ordinary... especially his hat !
The "B" westerns often ended with a group shot of everyone laughing at something the sidekick has said.

Henry Fonda always survrves the shootout.

The general goods stores never run out of stuff.
You would think that in a small town something would be in short supply.
Also, where does everyone live? Often the main street is all there is-you dont see any farms or other houses in the outskirts, yet people and families are strolling around in the main street--always busy.

LAUDANUM. THE OPOID ADDICTION OF THE TIMES. That reminds me of the Star Trek where McCoy goes to Doc Holliday to get supplies.
That guy playing him was quite effective with the threats.

Tol' ya it was silly not to be 'that guy' but HOW TO MURDER YOUR WIFE explains this. Stanley, the vons with the white hats... are they the good guys or the bad guys? [half asleep] white hats good guys, black hats bad guys, okay? the fact that back then, most TV's showed things in black and white...

On # 4. you mentioned here " poisoned water " which reminded me of an episode of the show - The Rifleman from 1958 to 1963 I don't remember what season or episode it was specifically ( the only episode of this show I actually caught once on MeTV ) . It was a scene when Chuck Conners character was telling his son's character - to NOT drink water out of a certain covered wooden barrel or he would become very ill . So in the next scene it was late at night and what does the kid do but go right for the barrel with the tainted water he was already told not to drink from . Thanks so much towncaller for your subject post .

mszanadu The Rifleman seems to be on nearly 24/7 on MeTv. Worth seeing more than that one episode … some of them are really good.
Do have to wonder why they were lugging around tainted water instead of dumping it out !

Thanks so much BATouttaheck for the recommendation on this classic TV western show and for your reply here too . Perhaps I will give this show another viewing again sometime soon . I also was wondering why myself they were keeping around tainted water ( at the time it didn't make any sense to me either ) .
