Any other fans of this 1970s series? Towards the end it started to lose some steam, but it still should have had a longer run than it did. When it was good, it was *really* good. Darren McGavin is great fun in the title role, and he had excellent chemistry with Simon Oakland as the long-suffering Tony Vincenzo. The series is overdue for a Blu release from Universal.

I'm loving the reruns on MeTV. Alas, the ABC station that carries MeTV in the Boston area runs news in the Kolchak time slot!

Yep. This one scared me as a kid, and I'm loving re-watching on MeTV and seeing episodes I missed back then.
I vaguely remember that it was and inspiration for The X-Files creators and also Supernatural - especially the monster of the week episodes.

I love Kolchak and I agree it should've gone on longer. Now what would've been a great TV crossover would be Kolchak covering a murder in Los Angeles that Columbo is investigating and Quincy is doing the autopsy on, and all three agree there's something very strange going on.

All the Kolchaks were pretty tame, even by 1974 standards.

Never tire of this show - ever .
Always laugh when Carl and Tony scream at the same time " FACTS ! " LOL .
Thanks heysweden for your subject post .

It's so not offense that you could even watch it with a family member and not upset them either . Dan Curtis certainly got it right with his memorable works indeed he will be missed but never forgotten . Thanks naterdawg for your reply .

Whoa imagine that novastar6 ! What an excellent episode that would have made or better yet made into a TV Movie to cover more ground on it . I agree also would have love to seen this series go to seasons 5 or 7 but still happy with what I do have anyway . Thanks so much novastar6 for your reply .

I watched Kolchak on its premiere date: Friday, September 13, 1974. Had so much hope for this series, but it was tame from the get-go, even by 1974 standards.

The one with the swamp creature that could look like the person you trusted most was one that stuck in my head. The scene that gave me sleepless nights as a small tyke was when Kolchak had to stay in a church so a demon(?) couldn't kill him. The scene where the creature is peering through a window at Kolchak gave me bad dreams when I finally fell asleep.

The scene where the creature is peering through a window at Kolchak gave me bad dreams when I finally fell asleep. The episode you mentioned here with " the creepy guy in the church window scene " was called - " Firefall " - ad 11/8/1974 this was the Wikipedia write up for it too - " The ghost of an arsonist tries to take over a renowned conductor's body as his doppelganger. This episode was combined with "The Energy Eater" and new narration by Darren McGavin to compose the telemovie Crackle of Death, effectively removing it from original syndication. One of the locations used, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Los Angeles, burned down in 1983. " That is also another favorite of mine as well . I agree this scene is really creepy you almost feel relieved for Kolchak and the conductor guy ( forgot his character name ) that they are tucked away safely in the church so this creature could not get at them . Thanks so much poelzig for your reply .

I remember that scene very well homergreg . IMPO - it certainly was quite impressive for the stunt motorbike driver to be able do all of that and appear to be headless at the same time ( also a very clever modern spin-off to the original headless horseman story too ! ) . It really did not look like an easy stunt for sure but the stunt driver appeared to make it look flawless . All of this before the use of CGI Filming as well - brilliant . Thanks so much homergreg for this YouTube short video and your reply .

Great show, I loved it.
I hear there were moves to get the actor to reprise his role in a couple of appearances on the X Files, but it never panned out. Shame, that would have been awesome.

The first one was really good, fast paced and original. (the vampire = Barry Atwater) The rest were just a variation on the same story, that's why it ran out of gas.

Darren McGavin DID do an episode of the X-Files. He was the original FBI agent that started the X-Files. Negotiations to have him do more episodes did fail however.

Yeah, but the original idea was to have him show up as Kolchak, in a "this has all been going on for decades, Mulder" kind of role.

The scene where the creature is peering through a window at Kolchak gave me bad dreams when I finally fell asleep. You got it right--you had to be a "small tyke" in order to find any of this even remotely frightening. To an adult, it was watered down horror, with lame monsters and predictable plots. Each one was the same: Kolchak tracks down a monster, it attacks him, it disappears, and he can't prove it even existed. The end.
