I venture to say this is kind of a big time guy to limit the selections to two, when many other lesser ones have had more, but I felt comfortable with my two picks of Kwai and Expectations. They were pretty fantastic. My third would have been that guy who didn't want to be one of those "little people, a silly people".

Was Lean a good filmmaker? Yes. He's among my favorite directors because of the visual scale, editing, and the ensemble performances of his historical epics. I also appreciate his lower scale dramas like Brief Encounter where the emphasis is more on characters.
