Alright, I can't take credit for this idea. I was watching the latest Kevin Smith podcast and they came up with a theory that he could actually be Martian Manhunter. It's a nice theory and it would be a good way to introduce him. They talk about it at 37:45 mark

wait, what? where does it say he's coming back? There have been production photos that have Chris Pine on set in 80's clothes. Some shots even have him with a fanny pack.

Thanks. but making him martian manhunter would be weird…. like, i think it would be disappointing if it looked like he was back but it's all a trick

But why would J’onn disguise himself as a dead guy from 1918?

In some peoples minds it would cheapen the sacrifice he made back in WW1. I don't think it will, but some here think that Cap coming back from his crash/frozen cheapened Cap's sacrifice in The First Avenger.

But why would J’onn disguise himself as a dead guy from 1918? It makes him an asshole. Take the image of a guy the woman you are hanging out with loved decades ago. Only other way they can get past that is to make him a "rube" type that don't understand he's doing something wrong.

The fish out of water thing would work for a bit, but if he continued after it was explained to him it would make him stupid. I guess the only way they could get past that is if they nerfed his shape shifting some how. They could say that he got stuck in that form some how. Something to do with the atmosphere caused him to get stuck, but that's lazy.

Something to do with the atmosphere caused him to get stuck, but that's lazy. And would take away a use of the character. Because you know another director would want to maximize the "Mystique"ness of that ability. After that being stuck as that character wouldn't make sense. Maybe you can Starman him and say that's his default form when he got here. He followed Diana after he saw what she did as Wonder Woman and saw a picture of Steve in her home. But that is a bit convoluted and would take up way too much time.

I've heard of this theory or that he might be "Clayface." I'd be more on board with this one than if he happened to be Steve Trevor's grandson.

Clayface would be an extremely odd choice for a Wonder Woman movie, especially when the movie takes place at a point where Bruce Wayne would still be a kid.

Err. No. While I would love to see Martian Manhunter get his own movie along with Supergirl, Green Arrow and Black Canary and other superheroes that are in the DC TV shows it makes no sense having him appear in ‘Wonder Woman 2.’ At this point he’s more of a Superman character on screen who is known to most viewers for appearing in ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Smallville’ as a side character. I think we have better chances of a Martian Manhunter spinoff show happening at this point on the CW Network or DC Online Streaming Service. Plus I would rather see 'Wonder Woman' focus on proper 'Wonder Woman' characters like the Wonder Girls (Cassie and Donna) instead of bringing in characters that have nothing to do with Wonder Woman.

Not sure how it works from a narrative sense, but the DCEU could use more Chris Pine and Martian Manhunter would be great, so I'll take it.

Nerdist thought this too a week or two ago.
I like it in that we would get a Big Screen Martian Manhunter...
I dislike it in that it would be a waste of Steve Trevor and just a big stunt.

I've heard of this theory or that he might be "Clayface." I'd be more on board with this one than if he happened to be Steve Trevor's grandson. I remember, probably almost two years ago now, when they said who was directing the BATMAN solo film. They asked what villains might appear, that hadn't already been outright named, and Clayface not only came up a lot, but was mentioned by one of the actors (Toby Kebbell) that a lot of fans thought might end up in, due to his previous working relationship with the director. Kebbell made it clear, at the time, that he had NOT been approached and knew nothing about it- but that he'd love it and he would want to play Clayface, since he doubted he would get a good guy role
