Matthews and Tavares lift the Leafs past Montreal. Hopefully that wont be a pattern this season, but I have a feeling it will. That was a poor first game. The Habs made the Leafs look slow.

Caps didn't make any acknowledgement of Trotz during the pregame celebrations. Disgraceful. Afraid of the big cheer he'd have gotten.

Leafs lose at home to Ottawa while Montreal beats Pitt on the road. Toronto have looked the worst of any of the 3 so far when expectations were that they'd easily be the best. I know it's early and a small sample size.
People keep talking about how Nylander is losing by sitting out and the Leafs won't miss him but I wonder if that changes if Toronto continues to struggle. Nylander would bring a very good defenceman back in a trade.

Toronto 7 - Chicago 6
Tavares' first hat trick as a Leaf, Matthews 2 goals, & 3 back & forth goals in the final 2 minutes of the 3rd before OT.
Garrett Sparks needs some adversity I think before he gets comfortable in net behind Andersen. Calder Cup winning goalie in the spring, he looks insecure like he feels he doesn't belong. Right now playing like so f'n hard not to lose, he's allowing the easy stuff in. Leafs D looking plain jane, most of all the forwards playing back - protecting leads playing on their heels has gotta change.

Hockey Night in Canada featured the new sleeker goalie equipment, most notably the shoulder pads being downsized, thus allowing more shot space up high. They showed the Jets goalie doing his absolute perfect form while letting in a high one, & he looked completely baffled & pissed off. The game need scoring, goalies will need to adapt. The NHL at the end of the day is entertainment, & more scoring will create more excitement. It will settle down by Christmas either way - goalies will adapt.

I guess goalies will have to more active in making saves rather than just letting the puck hit them. Let's see who adapts the best/worst.

Leafs score 7 again. After 4 games Matthews has 7 goals and Tavares 6. Nylander's agent is not getting a Christmas card from his client. I would trade him for a stud defenseman. He is not a playmaker as much as a finisher & with this group he's not really required nor would it appear enough ice time & space to warrant as much money as he wants. Winning 16 playoff games takes much greater balance than the Leafs currently have. Nylander as investment to be dealt isn't a bad thing, it's just good business.

The Leafs have all the offence they need without him as they need a horse on defense to win in the playoffs so I'd deal him.

As it is, he's much more a finisher than a creator on a team already fully capable of scoring, all the while coughing up leads like they're allergic to defense.

President's Trophy and division champions I can KINDA see the point of banners for. Each are their own special achievements, plus fans and teams usually make a big deal out of winning their division. But if you win the President's Trophy isn't it already a freaking given that you're the number one seed in the conference? Or as they put it, "regular season conference champions"?
