The ones where they checked in and out of work with a time clock. Brilliant ! Ralph Wolf and Sam Sheepdog.
"See you tomorrow Ralph."
"You too Sam."

I'm thinking that were it not for the Coyote, Acme would have gone under decades ago.

Back in the '00's, there was a communications network called Road Runner. I guess it must have flopped, because I haven't heard anything about them for a long time.

I think Daedalus was also an inspiration for Wile E Coyote. The Icarus legend tends to play out in the cartoons--where he achieves some amazing inventive feet only to have it fall apart on him.

But Daedalus was successful in his endeavors, from designing the Labyrinth to house the Minotaur, to the wings that enabled him and his son to escape from Crete. It was Icarus' pride and arrogance that led him to fly too close to the sun, where the wax holding his wings together melted, causing him to fall into the sea and drown.

Yes but that particular story has both the invention and the backfiring of it. Most people don't even know who Daedalus is, they only know the Icarus part. Like the merging of Frankenstein and creation.
And Wile E Coyote is shown to have pride and arrogance in some cartoons, especially the ones with Bugs Bunny.

Oh, there's no question that Wile E. had pride and arrogance. But that wasn't the cause of his Acme orders failing; either they were defective to begin with, or Wile E. just didn't know how to use them properly. All in all, I credit "karma" with the Road Runner's victories over the Coyote. As for Bugs, as I said earlier, he was much more intelligent than Wile E. The Coyote's "genius" was only in his own imagination. Wile E. was no more an adversary to Bugs than was Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck, or Yosemite Sam.

Icarus didnt know how to use his product.

I'm sorry, but I must disagree. It wasn't that Icarus didn't know how to use the product, namely, the wings; it was just that he thought he could get away with flying too close to the sun, despite his father's warnings. It's similar to the story of Phaeton, the mortal son of Helios, who begged his father to let him drive the sun chariot, despite his total inexperience. Helios was forced to consent, as he had sworn an oath on the river Styx. As a result, the earth was set on fire due to Phaeton's awkwardness and carelessness, forcing Zeus to strike him dead with his thunderbolt. BTW, as you might have guessed, I'm nuts about Greek mythology, .

Yeah but that isn't what is relevant to the Road Runner situation. It's the basic idea that he took the wings, and used them incorrectly. Or just not good enough (not heat proof).
Whatever the case, for the purpose of Wile E Coyote, you have the eccentric invention, and the failure of it. I only mentioned it because Sisyphus (and Tantalus) came into the conversation earlier--but you could also consider Aesop as an inspiration for it as well, whether intentional or not.

Wile was using the Acme Products according to the directions .. his timing was always off because of RR's speed.
I always thought that it was all intended only to be FUNNY … what a concept .. silly me

Prime, I don't understand how you could compare Wile E. with Tantalus! Whatever his flaws, the Coyote would never have his own son (if he had one) become a two-legged pot roast and served up to the gods! Some writers considered Tantalus to be insane; Wile E., while obsessed, was never insane.

Ha yes I remember the Electric Company cartoons and the 1980 one where he finally catches him.
I had a viewmaster of them too-with those creepy puppets they used.

Has there ever been a movie where some people are on a desert highway by some cliffs and a real roadrunner and coyote go by? I seem to remember something where that happened. Maybe it was a commercial.
