I loved the flagship show, except the last couple of seasons, when the writing became weak.
Same with L&O:SVU. The early seasons were great, but, as more and more regular characters left the show (replaced by inferior actors), the show lost something. IMO, it is long overdue for cancellation.
I don't like L&O:CI. Can't stand the whacked-out Vincent D'Onofrio, and the scripts made no sense at all. Chris Noth was better, but it was not enough. And the female detectives were little more than window dressing.
I only saw a couple of episodes of L&O:TRIAL BY JURY. Could scarcely keep my eyes open!
I admit I never saw L&O:LA, but I heard it was lousy. So much so that it had a complete cast change mid-season. Not that it did any good; the show was cancelled after one season.
Your thoughts?

Law & Order: SVU was my favorite series in the franchise. I loved the pairing of Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni. It was good to see a man and woman working together as partners without getting romantically involved. The stories were usually compelling with interesting twists, and the supporting cast was good. Law & Order: CI -- it took me awhile to grow accustomed to Vincent D'Onofrio, but once I did I found his Robert Goren an intesting and even endearing character. As with SVU, CI paired Goren with a female partner, Kathryn Erbe, and she proved to be a good foil for D'Onofrio -- her stability vs. his quirkiness. I found the series very entertaining with compelling stories. My biggest complaint is one that I have with many successful series. All the Law & Order shows continued running too long. I've never watched L&O: LA either.

Liked the original L&O best, and longest. Like all long-running shows it lost steam after a time, but it took quite a few years for that to happen. Best aspect of the show was the refusal to delve into the characters' personal lives for soap opera--a bad habit that came to pretty much wreck SVU, which I liked in the earlier seasons, but tired of once it became over-intense, lost any sense of humor whatsoever, and started relying on absurdly OTT villains and a 'cops can never do wrong/anyone who questions cop behavior is suspect' attitude that I found somewhat disturbing.
CI: liked D'Onofrio a lot, liked the series somewhat less, especially the silly Nicole the Supevillainess business. I even enjoyed the Jeff Goldblum eps up to a point, although I felt the whole thing was getting a little ridiculous by that time.
T by J: I may be one of the five people on the planet who actually really enjoyed the show, and found the whole premise of the behind-the-scenes goings on of jury selection incredibly interesting. I was very disappointed to see this one disappear so quickly.
LA I never watched, and from what little I've glimpsed of it, have no desire to.

I love the original L&O, arguably my favorite show ever, outstanding show. I love the combination of detective work and legal stuff and I like how little of the personal lives of the main characters. Criminal Intent was excellent in its first few seasons, before it became a total soap. SVU used to be pretty good, now itβs much weaker without Cragen and Munch and some other key recurring characters, I still watch it but I dislike the soapy elements of it and the overfocus on Benson.

The best episode of the original Law & Order series was in the last season, and guest starred Anna Gunn.
I liked the Dennis Farina shows best.

You're mentioned a few times on my thread in the Classical Films board. I agree with you about the character of Nicole. She was a real pain-in-ass whose only purpose was to push Goren's buttons. And Olivia d'Abo was awful!

And Olivia d'Abo was awful! Thank you! (And I checked out that thread, which made me mist up seeing all of those names--I think I may start hanging around the CFB once again.) And yes, I just thought the character became silly--they tried to play her as 'Moriarty in skirts', and it became embarrassing, pushing a pretty interesting procedural into totally unrealistic territory...and I swear, even though I knew d'Abo was British, she sounded almost like an American actress doing a bad accent. The character just annoyed me no end, and added nothing to the series--in fact, she weakened it considerably.

Well, if I remember correctly, Nicole was from Australia. So it was the case of a British actress attempting an Aussie accent.

I HATED the Nicole Wallace episodes of CI, she was a cartoon super villain, and the episodes were very soapy.

I HATED the Nicole Wallace episodes of CI, she was a cartoon super villain, and the episodes were very soapy. CI was already pushing it a bit with the Goren character, attempting to make him some sort of 'Sherlock'-style savant, and as much as I like Vince I couldn't help but feel that that sort of characterization wasn't a totally happy fit with the supposedly gritty realism aura of the franchise. Adding a supervillain just pushed it too far over the top, and d'Abo's lousy acting made it that much worse.

I agree with your views that SVU has become too "soapy". On the old format, there were dozens of threads really knocking the kid that Olivia Benson adopted. While I can't find anything wrong with the kid himself, I do feel that the always-occupied Olivia was far from a fit person to adopt. And how the hell could she afford a nanny on a cop's salary? But, as Jesse L. Martin (whom I have had the pleasure of meeting a few times) said, "It's TeeVee! It's TeeVee!" LOL.
