I have just seen a really really wonderful, creative, original and hilariously funny movie called Sorry To Bother You.
If you have a chance, see it. The acting is AMAZING, the directors style is very unique (and will be marked as unique for him later on I am sure), and the amount of weird and funny is insane. Its like if Black Mirror was retold by Rickey Gervais and the result directed by Terry Gilliam in his younger years, but with the supervision of the creative team behind Green Wing and Michel Gondry. Really Really Really awesome.
It does lay the social and racial commentary pretty heavily onto the audience but unlike the fail of First Purge, this one actually may help under-represented communities on screen. but regardless of that, go see it is really funny, the theatre I was in was laughing throughout the entire film and clapping like crazy after it ended. 9/10 from me and will be seeing it again for sure. Both Lakeith Seinfeld and Armie Hammer did a really amazing job in their roles.

Nice to hear about Hammer being in good movies again in recent years. yep. I really liked him in The Peach Molesting movie (too lazy to google the real title now) and he did an equally awesome job here. There is one song that I cant wait to download and listen to once it becomes available. Its very non-pc but hilariously funny. And Armie Hammers acting throughout the song is partly what makes it so great. Wait till you see! That song is bound to become a hit. Although none of us white folk will be aloud to sing along

Can't wait. Going Sat. If I dress up for Halloween, thinking about going as Stanfield's character.

I really really like this while acknowledging that it's a little rough around the edges script-wise and occasionally directing wise. But that is to be expected from a debut director directing a feature for the first time more than not. Just felt like there were a few aspects that were underdeveloped/unneeded...like Thompson's character for example. She's great acting-wise and always a presence, but she felt more like a concept than someone fleshed out.
But for so many themes and ideas it puts on the screen with capitalism, American work life, race, and assimilation, it does come together in a pretty cohesive way. To me, as an African-American, the theme of assimilation resonated most. And yes, that scene with the song was so powerful and unnerving, directed spectacularly also.
Definitely recommend but I could see some people just not being into it. Too surreal and absurdist for some.

Wow, for those who have not seen it, DO NOT visit the Wikipedia page. It spoils the big twist in the summary

Probably a :nope: right? out of interest, which part did you find were weaker from directing point of view?

This kind of goes back to the old "should a person not black say the N word if saying a lyric?" question. I generally look the other way if/when this happens, I've determined over the years that you can really tell the tone/delivery of how a person says the word. This song in the movie is pretty clear though lol in its intent/what it's trying to say, the moment right before it is just as good as the actual song and I wager many blacks have felt like that at some point in time. Hum it? Sure. Saying it? Don't think so. Some of the protest scenes went to long imo. It took me the first two times when Cash is calling customers and "dropping in" while they're doing other things but not literally for me to pick up "oh, this is surreal." From there, I kind of just went with the movie. A few transitions felt a little awkward, but I suppose my weak directing gripe is more with feel/knowing when to stop a scene than aesthetic, because he pretty much nailed a good look (vivid outside of the office, super drab within it).

Hum it? Sure. Saying it? Don't think so. i get the philosophy behind it, but its just kinda odd when the word is still SO common in arts, culture AND on the streets. I live in a black neighborhood and i mean really black, I am one of only 3 white people on the entire block of my street that I ever see, and I hear the word all the time. People walking by, singing it, people yelling it at each other A LOT, people causally dropping it when telling stories, its like how crazy is this going to get, will we really have a word that is to be used only if your skin has a certain color? anyway, yes that scene is brilliant and I am sure many black people experienced that, I know from a black friend who cant dance that she was exposed to being stereotyped a LOT in her life, people almost demanding that she dances on account of her being black, meaning :surely u can dance, stop lying to us:…

I thought it was pretty terrible. It may have tried to be off the wall zany brilliant in a Being John Malkovith kinda way (im not even sure). Either way, it just fell on its face.

Always happy to learn more from "the other side".

I laughed out loud a couple times. But in the end it just didn't do anything for me.
