I’d go with Titanic. That movie was number one at the box office for 15 weeks, and it not only was the first movie to cross the billion dollar mark, but actually came close to grossing $2 billion in its initial run theatrical run. Also, it did all this at a time when movies didn’t benefit from inflated 3D ticket prices, and couldn’t rely on China to make a lot of money.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Whether it turned out to be good or bad, not once in hell did I expect it to come just shy of a billion dollars.

To be honest, The Dark Knight. Not that I thought it would flop, but I definitely didn't expect $550 million domestically and just over $1 billion world wide.

Titanic. I think it was ether due to the markets opening up thanks to changes in trade agreements around culture, or just a lot of BS and it was never as popular as they claim. Were people really paying high ticket prices to watch it 4 times in a row?
They debated it endlessly on newsgroups whether it would be popular like Star Wars.
Time settled that. Totally forgotten.

Wait, the movie or the debates? Both. No one talks about Titanic anymore. Except to discuss why it was briefly popular.

Or to reference it. I namedrop it and people respond positively. They lied. The heart will NOT go on.
And JarJar and Ackbars get more attention than DiCaprio's Jack.

I mean, it probably helps that Star Wars is an ongoing franchise, while Titanic was just one film that happened to be based on a true story.

We know the answer.
No. If the character was called Jackbar he would have a legion of internet namesakes today.

I'll go with Titanic. Your explanations were perfect. If the movie were released today, it likely would not gross as much money.

I'd say "The Blair Witch Project" it was just some people with a hand held camera and it became this huge hit that everyone had to see. I'd call that surprising.

I liked it quite a lot, even got actor Mike's autograph on the book, but its success was crazy surprising. I remember a car filled to the brim with young guys and girls that pulled up to me as I was walking down the sidewalk with groceries. They were from a distant suburb and drove all the way into the city to see the movie, which was playing at only one theater in the entire state, and they were lost. To to this day I wonder if they were excited to see the movie because they fell for the viral marketing which hinted it was truly found footage. Of course, the studio expanded the distribution once they realized what they had on their hands.

I ended up seeing Titanic twice at the theater. To be honest, it was with two different dates, and i was more interested in making them happy and see what transpired the rest of the night... LOL. College was fun.

Dirty Dancing!
It rescued some arthouse cinemas in Germany.

For me, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. -based on a ride -starring a nearly forgotten actor named Johnny Depp -directed by the "Mouse Hunt" guy Yeah, I didn't think this was going to do the gangbusters that it did.

Avatar. Its 2.8 billion nearly 10 years ago has still to be topped. So far no movie has even came close. It remains the only movie to have grossed 2 billion overseas.

When will Avatar be overtaken. If the trade war with China continues Hollywood could be banned from showing there movies there

There are several but I will mention the most recent one that comes to mind - Venom. After the lower than expected reception of Solo (Star Wars), many were skeptical that a movie about a side character in the Spiderman universe can succeed at the box office. With the Tomato meter at 29% and Metacritic meter at 35, everything looked bleak. The rest is history. With the budget of 100 million, it has made over 500 million so far. Venom proved that predicting box office success is not an exact science. At least not at the present time.
