I don't think Pirates of the Caribbean was a surprise. It was a well known ride, and unlike previous pirate movies, had a fantasy element. That they made a big deal out of Depp was more of the surprise-as they did with DiCaprio in Titanic. But we still have the phenomenon of "Hollywood accounting." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_accountingHollywood will manipulate profits for strategic reasons. I remember specifically when Titanic came out they said it showed the whole world has the same tastes in movies and was used to promote the globalist BS so they could reduce homegrown content.

For me, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. -based on a ride -starring a nearly forgotten actor named Johnny Depp -directed by the "Mouse Hunt" guy Yeah, I didn't think this was going to do the gangbusters that it did. Also because several other movies bout Pirates in the decades before PotC were big sucess fixed that for ya

^Yes, Black Panther. I can understand a superhero film doing well in general. But to THAT level? It's an absolutely silly/juvenile/childish film. I'm shocked that people actually bothered to see it more than once. I can't wrap my head around it. It's like, why? There have been some superhero films that are actually smart, intriguing dramas. This film was nothing remotely like that.

Titanic
3hrs 14mins
The near astonishing feat of both Titanic & Avatar 3D (which had more anticipated hype) was their long run times actually made showtimes less frequent, & thus higher demand I guess.
Titanic though was chalked up to becoming the biggest bomb of all time months out if I recall. Cameron taking the love story & putting it full front, high risk/high reward for such a high priced disaster film. I will say that the longer Titanic remained #1, the less of a surprise it was - Titanic's audience ended up being nearly everyone. Girls, guys, kids, seniors... I've yet to encounter such a cross section of a film's audience.
