Before anyone comments, I’m not saying that disliking his movie is a problem. I just think the way that fans have been acting as though he’s the anti-Christ of Star Wars who deserves to have his career thrown in a dumpster is ridiculous. He’s just some guy who directed a movie that a lot of fans didn’t like.
I’m not calling out any specific posters around here, but I should just point out that James Mangold has a point. The Star Wars fandom is so full of toxic individuals that it’s a wonder that anyone is still willing to work on these movies. And no, this isn’t a race or sex thing. I am not accusing each and every person who dislikes TLJ of being a bigoted pig, and contrary to what some might believe, that’s not what Rian Johnson has claimed either. He’s called out the fans who have chosen to harass people like him and Kelly Marie Tran, not the critics of TLJ as a whole. Let’s face it, the Star Wars franchise does indeed have some very toxic fans, and I’m not even referring to the accusations of racism and misogyny.
For the record, I don’t care for Rian Johnson. I just think the level of hatred that is directed towards him is annoying at best, and downright creepy at worst.
Edit: I suppose I should once again explain that I did not make this post because I was trying to call out anyone on this site. I was not suggesting that the people here were creeps, I was merely arguing that the way certain other people have been obsessing over Rian Johnson for making a movie they hate is ridiculous. It was never my intention to insult anyone here. Anyway, I’ll edit the title of the thread.

It really is pathetic.
I thought the movie was bland, but not the dumpster fire people are making it out to be.
It is not like he is an openly malicious person who was making the movie to tick off people. He was simply making the movie he envisioned.

the problem is Rian Johnson can't handle criticism without attacking fans and calling them man-babies. He keeps actively making the problem worse and often trolls them on twitter.
Just check how calm Ron Howard deals with fans on twitter, and doen't take criticism personally.

More fan shaming. We can't complain anymore. We're creepy. We're mentally ill. We're the problem. Criticism is dead, y'all. You seem to have missed the part at the very beginning of my post where I explicitly said that disliking the movie isn’t a problem. Criticism is fine. The problem is that many fans take their issues with the movie on a personal level, to the point where they’re demanding Rian Johnson lose his job.

The problem is that many fans take their issues with the movie on a personal level, to the point where they’re demanding Rian Johnson lose his job. Clearly criticism isn't fine. I'll say it again. This is the new spin Disney and the media are trying very hard to drill into the collective consciousness. Disney isn't to blame for the decline of Star Wars. Toxic fans are. Learn to love it and shut your trap. Criticism is the enemy. And if you do dare speak your mind, prepare to be labeled all sorts of unpleasant things. I don’t know about Disney, but I certainly never implied that fans are to blame for the state of the movies. I said that many of them are to blame for the antagonistic behavior they display towards the people involved in these movies.

another thing i will say, i have never seen backlash this bad against a franchise film in general that has just been building and building the past 6 months. if you are just that unsatisfied, it might be time to move on.
vote with your wallets, that is the only message Di$ney will listen to

As you can see the war on Star Wars fandom gets me a little triggered. Keep in mind that I’m not saying this goes for all, or even the majority of fans, but there is no denying that some people take things too far. I don’t care for the direction that Disney has been taking the franchise either, but the most I do about that is express the wish that they would give the franchise a break.

Uh this is not that different from the hate Lucas got for the prequels.

the reactions at Lucasfilm are not so much those of a private company vis-a-vis disgruntled customers, but rather that of a dictatorship villifying it's rebelling subjects as bullies, sexists and right-wingers - check the news about D Ortega in Nicaragua today, was he talking about his people or SW fans, the lines blur...
Seriously, Johnson is not as much of an hack as JJ Abrams, he essentially now pays the price for what was messed up in Ep VII already by ruining the OT character, introducing badly written new characters, and rehashing the storyline.
And yet, Johnson shares the blame by adding insult to injury. He and his ilk are fuelling the flames and acting unprofessionally. The media strategy they pursue is mindbogeling.
George Lucas must turn in his grave, really.

The problem is that many fans take their issues with the movie on a personal level, to the point where they’re demanding Rian Johnson lose his job. Have you read the things Johnson has said? the movie was awful, absolutely awful and it ruined Luke Skywalker. I mean, it’s just Luke Skywalker right? Not like he’s literally one of the most beloved characters in fiction or anything. And the movie was obviously part of this wave of PC SJW politics that is ruining everything in entertainment. So it’s great that you think it’s “creepy” that fans reacted to Johnson ruining SW and then attacking fans but I find it “creepy” how these SJWs can’t just make a movie without putting in their horrible politics. There’s a reason there was such a huge drop off in the BO between TFA and TLJ. There’s a reason Solo bombed, people are fed up with this crap. Disney can downplay the backlash but fans have had it with SJW politics and being told we’re “toxic”. ”Toxic” is taking Luke Skywalker and turning him into a bitter old man who won’t help his friends, then killing him by some ridiculous force power that we’ve never seen or heard of before. “Toxic” is purple haired space ladies and acting like characters are interesting or worthy of screen time because “diversity”. I mean, who cares about the relationship between Rey and Finn? Who cares about Phasma VS Finn? Who cares about Rose Tico? And thinking the reaction Johnson hot is “creepy”while ignoring his behavior is just dumb. He brought that reaction on himself. Just like Paul Fieg with Ghostbusters. Yeah, antagonize, lecture and attack fans. Real smart and great for the BO.

TLJ comes across as bad fan fic crossed with a Mad Magazine parody. When 10 AT-ATs are standing there blasting Luke? How is that not laughable? When they have a giant laser shooting a giant door how is anyone supposed to take that seriously? Space Leia? Freaking Rose Tico Lol? That stupid “your mamma” joke? Johnson is an absolutely a hack based on TLJ.

By calling characters like Rose Tico awful? Great, the actress is Asian...still an awful character that got more screen time than Luke Skywalker. Gosh, why wouldn’t everyone love that? so sorry no, I totally disagree with you. A garbage film more concerned with politics than story got the reaction it deserved. Keep an eye on the BO for future SW movies because if they keep this up they’re literally going to kill SW. I mean who thought it was even possible to make a SW film that would lose money? SW is a license to print money. But when you put politics over story and make horrible movie that shits on legacy characters.....people react.

Death threats? Who? How? I’ve received “death threats” on the internet....who hasn’t? You guys are such drama queens. As far as I know Tran never said she was bullied off of Twitter, that’s just what the media blared. If she actually said that’s why she left I never saw it. but you want so badly to be victims, everyone is “toxic”or “problematic”. A 13 YO telling you to “die in a fire” is a “death threat” lol. if they really recieved “death threats” why weren’t the police called? the media tells you something and you instantly believe it, which is just dumb. So be sure to buy lots of SW tickets and toys because if they keep antagonizing the fan base and making SJW garbage nobody else will.

What a crime that some random people on the internet who don’t hire directors think he should never work again. are you his agent or something?

My point is that people are taking their dislike for a movie too personally, to the point where they are treating a director as a pariah who deserves to be shunned. That’s creepy is what I’m saying.

I don’t buy merchandise and I don’t care for Disney’s insistence on releasing a new film every year. Nice strawman, though.
