In my honest opinion The Dark Knight Rises should've been a two-parter with more influence taken from the Knightfall storyline. If I had my way I'd still have Bruce decide to return to his life as a crime fighter but say that in the last eight years he was still using some of his resources to keep an eye on Gotham( such as bat-like drones) and used connection with John Blake to keep any situation from reach a major threat level. Bane goes under the radar and effectively forces Bruce to put on the cape and cowl but is ineffective in his attempt to take him down and gets his back broken. Left for dead but still showing signs of life Alfred and Blake take him to the bat-cave to heal. Months pass and Bruce awakens from a coma and sees Gotham has gone to hell like in the actual movie: a bomb did indeed go off and caused a mighty earthquake in the city leading to an easy take over. Not seeming likely he'll ever walk again Bruce hands the mantle of Batman over to Blake who despite his lack of training is successful in stopping Bane. However, he comes to success after the realization that Bruce's crime fighting methodology was ineffective and thus he applies a more brutal approach which leaves Bane defeated and broken. On broadcast television Blake announces that he is the Batman, but Bruce and Alfred watch with concern.
The second half would've focused on Gotham trying to rebuild itself from Bane's takeover and the earthquake. Trying to fight crime 24/7 with little to no sleep or time for nutrition Blake's mental stability deteriorates and he becomes more unstable by injecting himself with protein, steroids, and taking drugs which eliminate the feeling to need 6-8 hours of daily, required REM sleep. Bruce, feeling a little better now and more capable of walking than before, confronts him but is beaten to a pulp, Alfred soon follows and is basically left on death's door when its over. Bruce musters enough strength to escape and he travels to find the league of shadows to help re-train him to heal his body and mind to fight with Blake, he is reluctantly welcomed back by their new leader Talia, Ra's daughter, who also goes by the name "Lady Shiva" to some people. She allows him to be there in Nanda Parbat on the condition that he will take the mantle of Ra's Al Ghul if he is successful - He can't say no, otherwise he will face their wrath in his weakened state. Meanwhile Bane reawakens and his goons apply a new serum called "venom" which acts as a super steroid and pain killer, he plans to finish the job he started in Gotham with a remaining bomb that few knew the whereabouts and of course completely destroy Batman. Movie would end with Bane, Blake, and Bruce on top of the Wayne Enterprises
building. Bane is much more powerful now and is able to unmask Blake and Bruce to the world. Freeing themselves Bruce announces to the whole world that he is vengeance, the night, the REAL Batman. Bane still manages to reach for the trigger, Blake and Bruce reach for it but are too late and the entire building is in rubble. No survivors are found. We then cut to Nanda Parbat where Bruce is now the new leader of the League of Shadows but announces that they will be doing things much differently now than before.
^ This was all just off the top of my head, I think I would've liked the movie much more had it been this way.
