I went to see this first run in a theatre in Leischester Square, London in 1984. Even though it was not what I expected I enjoyed it and plan on buying a blu-ray copy. I found its plot to be rather campy and off the wall but thought this gave it a certain charm. Helen Slater was perfectly cast and I was sorry sequels did not emerge to let her play the role again. "Supergirl" article.

The best thing about the movie was Helen Slater. She was perfectly cast.
And Supergirl's aerial ballet sequence is still fantastic.
ONE OF THE WORST THINGS about the movie was the repetitive musical score. It sounded like a broken record, constantly playing the same melody, over and over again. It got old fast.

Not going to argue about Helen Slater, that was perfect casting.

Helen Slater was absolutely perfect and drop dead gorgeous in the role. The writing left a lot to be desired. That seems to be a common issue with many female superhero movies before Wonder Woman came out. Practically all of them have good leads and crappy stories.

I think the one successful 'superheroine' movie (edit: up to that point) was Leeloo in the Fifth Element and she wasn't even the main character!

The film was dated the moment it hit the screen. Sort of like Superman III. It is entertaining and amusing, but it is no Superman or Superman II - The Lester version. When I heard that a Donner version was being assembled I thought it almost certain I would prefer it to the Letter version. I was surprised to find I felt just the opposite after watching it. Margot Kidder had said it would be better, yet some of her very best scenes in any of the films were directed by Lester.
