Which is scarier in horror movies?

Absolutely the attic. They seem more creepy even if the basement is darker. I never went up there in my life fittingly enough.

Hmm. Think I'll opt for the attic. More relatable to me, since I don't have a basement. Plus if you get trapped up there, it'd probably be harder to escape.
I've probably overthought this.

Attics, by a country mile.
Basements are fairly predictable... But attics, anything or nothing can be up there. Its always tense when someone pops open the hatch, and puts their head through for a look-see by torchlight.

Attics, since they can have the advantage of spooky howling winds.
Basements can have earthen floor which can smell very weird and "atmospheric", but that can't be captured in cinema.
I spent many childhood summers on my grandfather's farm and old country house, so I know quite a bit about both. My personal fascination with 60s and 70s countryside horrors no doubt originates from these experiences.

Basement. Less escape routes, so it's easier to be trapped down there.

Just the opposite. If you have an actual underground basement it would be way harder to escape than it would be from an attic.

Both can be spooky to be sure, but I think the basement has the added affect of the descent into the underworld, so to speak. Plus many of the prototypical spooky basements are made of stone and or cement, and conjure up the idea of a gothic dungeon.

I voted basement because to me they are darker and have more hidden corners/rooms.

But if you did manage to escape from the basement you're basically home and dry. Just head straight for the door and you're out. Whereas with the attic - even if you did manage to get out without breaking your neck in the process - there's still the stairs to consider. And most of those old houses in horror flicks have lots and lots of stairs.

And most of those old houses in horror flicks have lots and lots of stairs. If you escape from the attic you may have a roof to deal with, but you may have windows or walls to break through, while generally you have only one exit in a true underground sub-basement... maybe two. I think there's more of a feeling of being trapped in there. But also that one exit from a basement would lead you to the house, so it's no advantage over the interior exit of an attic. Generally I would choose not to be stalked by a murderer anywhere, but I'd like my chances a bit better in an attic .

Don't forget The Blob!
The only horror movie that's coming to mind that actually features the attic scenario is Return of the Living Dead. That said, I would rather take the basement because if they're anything like mine, they're full of sharp objects you can use on whoever's trying to kill you AND there are escape windows down there.

I voted basement. That said, the attic scenes in The Changeling are some of the scariest and tension filed, wondering what's going to happen, ever filmed.

How about when the attic turns out to be the basement? That's the new Shyamalan movie, I think.
