In light of recent events, topical too.

Jack Nicholson must still be taking cold showers, but his hopes must have been raised during the elections.

MUCH much better than I thought it would be after seeing the Nicholson shouting clips way too often.
It's a very good story and the performances are spot on even for non Tom and Jack fans.
I love that Dawson (one of the accused marines) is played by Wolfgang Bodeson who "Originally worked as a location scout for various film-makers. He was working for Rob Reiner on "A Few Good Men" when Reiner decided he was perfect for the part of Lance Corporal Harold Dawson."
I also liked that they did not write in a hokey romance or even a flirtation between Demi Moore and anyone else !
Good choice if looking for a courtroom drama that will catch and hold your attention.

I also liked that they did not write in a hokey romance or even a flirtation between Demi Moore and anyone else ! I like that a lot. To paraphrase Pacino: "It's the smart move. Reiner was always smarter."

Two flaws: Cruise delivers too many cute lines; I couldn't buy the idea of Col Jessep giving it all away under pressure.

I like A Few Good Men, but a classic? No. A good movie, well written. My sense is that it was written maybe too much for those big scenes, for the flashy, quotable dialogue. A lot of those "big lines" ran hollow for me, but the movie played well, and aside from Jack Nicholson (sorry, guys), whom I felt was badly miscast, the acting was at times surprisingly effective.

Another thing is something Robert Ebert mentioned in his review:
'Rob Reiner's "A Few Good Men" is one of those movies that tells you what it's going to do, does it, and then tells you what it did. It doesn't think the audience is very bright. There is a scene that is absolutely wrong. In it, a lawyer played by Tom Cruise previews his courtroom strategy to his friends. The strategy then works as planned - which means that an element of surprise is missing from the most important moment in the movie, and the key scene by Jack Nicholson is undermined - robbed of suspense, and made inevitable.... We have already met the Jack Nicholson character in Cuba, where he is particularly good at sexist verbal brutality, which he aims especially at Moore. We know he will turn up again, and he does, in a denouement that would have had greater power if the movie didn't telegraph it.
What happens is that the movie brings us to the brink of a courtroom breakthrough, and then we get the scene that undermines everything, as Cruise explains to his friends what he hopes to do, how he hopes to do it, and how he thinks it will work. When Nicholson's big courtroom scene develops, we realize with sinking heart that it is following the movie's scenario. That robs us of pleasure two ways: (1) We are not allowed the pleasure of discovering Cruise's strategy for ourselves, and (2) Nicholson's behavior seems scripted and inevitable, and is robbed of shock value.'
