Manic Pixie Dream Girls are considered to be a bad type of character because they only exist to help the male protagonist with his problems. The title character in ZORBA THE GREEK is a better old version of that: A man who tries to teach someone younger to not be uptight and enjoy life. I say "better" because he has his own personal goals and problems. However, he's not a well-written character overall because, while we're supposed to see him as someone with troubles but that's still wise and free-spirited, I saw him as annoying and intrusive. The movie had a lot of potential because the subplot with the character known only as THE WIDOW is smart and tragic. Unfortunately, it's overshadowed by other subplots that are mostly boring, specially the one with MADAME HORTENSE. Actually, it feels like THE WIDOW's murder is forgotten right after the scene ends. At least it has decent performances. 3/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog (in English, in Spanish or in Italian).

But Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass does a fantastic rendition of the theme. I did, however, see "Never On Sunday", about another lusty, life-loving Greek. And I loved that movie!
