If so, how were they? What did you get out of the experience?

I still haven't caught Fate Of The Furious, however I have seen and enjoyed the rest of the franchise.

I seen 1-7. Fate Of The Furious I have yet to see.
I really enjoyed them. They are fun. With the exception of Tokyo Drift. That one sucks.

I have seen and enjoyed the entire franchise so far... Just remember that the third film: "Tokyo Drift", takes place later in the franchise. 1.) The Fast and the Furious (2001) Short - The Turbo Charged Prelude for 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) 2.) 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) Short - Los Bandoleros (2009) 3.) Fast & Furious (2009) 4.) Fast Five (2011) 5.) Fast & Furious 6 (2013) 6.) The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)7.) Furious 7 (2015) 8.) The Fate of the Furious (2017) Spin Off - Hobbs & Shaw (2019) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fast_and_the_FuriousEaster Egg: Han Lue is a fictional character in The Fast and the Furious franchise.
Han is known for munching on snacks. As pointed out by Gisele in Fast Five, this is part of his constant need to occupy his hands, as he is a former smoker. According to director Justin Lin, this is an Easter egg reference to the other chain-smoking Han Hu character in "Better Luck Tomorrow" (2002).
Actor Sung Kang played both characters!

I loved the first film back in 2001, when I was 15 years old.
It's a remake of Point Break, but with cars instead of surfers.
The second one was okay, it's a forgettable cheesy sequel that doesn't stand well on it's own, only good as a chapter of a saga. If this were the first film, I don't think it would have had a sequel. It was so bad, nobody showed up for the 3rd film.
Tokyo Drift was a breath of fresh air. At the time, I think Universal just slapped "Fast and Furious" on the title to get more box office money. It could have easily just been a solo racing film that stands on it's own called "Tokyo Drift". In fact, this could have been an Anthology racing series from this point on. But it wasn't (like the Halloween Series). The only tie to the first two was Vin Diesel's cameo at the end. Which they cleverly tied into later installments.
The fourth one was just as good as the original in my opinion. At the time, if no more had been made, I would have treated it like the 3rd and it could have been a trilogy. Han made a cameo at the beginning, which made it a prequel to Tokyo Drift. The only thing that tied it to Tokyo Drift.
5-7 is a trilogy within the franchise. You can actually ignore the other 4 films and just watch Fast Five, Fast and Furious 6, and Furious 7, by itself and it feels like a different franchise. Where the first 4 focus more on underground street racing and some slight FBI undercover stories, 5-7 is like an urban avengers, or a new age espionage franchise.
I haven't seen 8. I like to pretend 7 is the end. It was for me. I bowed out when Paul Walker did.

Similar to the Mission: Impossible film series, The Fast and the Furious film series struggled to find its identity after the first installment, but eventually found its rhythm midway into the series.
The first film was Point Break with race cars, but it was carried by the charisma of Paul Walker and Vin Diesel. 2 Fast 2 Furious was just okay and had to rely on the chemistry between Walker and Tyrese Gibson to make it watchable. I actually liked Tokyo Drift even though Lucas Black was too old to pass for a high school student and his acting was subpar. The location shots of Tokyo and the kinetic filmmaking of the drag racing scenes was pretty good.
It was great to see the original cast return for Fast & Furious, but I found the movie to be just okay. The plot was more or less the same as the first film, but there were some cool action set-pieces. Fast Five is where the film series really breaks from its roots and become James Bond-esque action thrillers, and the following two installments were just good. Only this time the action sequences became even more over-the-top and cartoonishly unrealistic.
Furious 7 had a well-executed emotional send-off to Paul Walker. With The Fate of the Furious, the film series is starting to wear out its welcome.

I am a fan of mindless action movies, so I have seen all of them.
The only one I fully like is Furious 7 though, which is just so much idiotic OTT fun. It is wonderfully self aware and just bonkers. This one actually transcends the franchise to become one of, if not the most ridiculous action movie of all time imo.
F&F (the original), F&F 5 and F&F 6 are solid.
2F2F, F&F:TD, F&F 4 and F&F 8 are very mediocre.

I didn't really get into the franchise until Fast Five*, and since then they've all been great fun. Just watch them as comedies.
*I thought original was a lame Point Break ripoff, and I saw 2 because my brother was obsessed with cars and the first one. I didn't see 3 and 4 until after Five.

It is a Point Break rip-off but still kind of fun imo. It's easily the second or third best in the franchise for me. Most people seem to like Fast 5 but that movie left very little impression on me.

I have seen every one including the mini-shorts that take place between the movies.
You either enjoy them as mindless action films or don't. I see them as Avengers movies with cars and the huge ensemble of multi-ethnic characters (which more blockbuster franchises should take note) have enjoyable camaraderie.

I rate/rank the series like this (NOTE: the date next to each movie is the most recent time I have re-watched the movie)... 1.The Fast and the Furious (2001) - 7/10 (July 21st 2016) 2.Fast Five (2011) (July 22nd 2016) 3.Fast & Furious (2009) - 6-6.5/10 (July 21st-22nd 2016(mostly on 21st)) 4.Furious Seven (2015) (Jan 21st 2016) -.Fast & Furious 6 (2013) (Mar 18th 2014) 6.The Fate of the Furious (2017) - 6/10 (May 20th 2017 which is my 1st viewing) 7.2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) (July 16th 2013) 8.The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) - 5.5-6/10 (July 17th 2013) the 1st/5th movies are within my Top 187 movies and the 4th/6th/7th movies are within my Top 236 movies. so while I like all of the movies, those five stand above the rest, especially the 1st/5th movies. p.s. come to think of it... I might re-watch the 8th movie soon as I have only seen it once so far and it's about time I see it again and I can't believe it's already been over four years since I last re-watched the 6th movie as I have seen that movie twice in total so far. hell, it's been over 5 years since I last re-watched the 2nd/3rd movies. time flies.
Ill take the F&F series over Marvel stuff hands down as the F&F series has re-watch value where as the Marvel movies tend not to with rare exception.
Yes, because that's when the series seemed to hit major mainstream success.
but I sort of see the series like this...
-1st/2nd/3rd movies = more about the racing.
-4th movie = transitional period between the old days and the new times. this is when the series started to become less about racing and was a setup for the following movies.
-5th movie on forward = major blockbusters as the racing (and general drama around it) seemed to take more of a backseat to general action. like the tone of the series changed.
p.s. I was watching the series and was a fan before they hit major success with the 5th movie on forward. I started watching them sometime before the 3rd movie. but it's not surprising as the general volume of movies I watched started to increase about 2003+ as that's about when I have seen the 1st/2nd movies.
@thegodfather
While it does seem a lot of what makes those movies click revolves around Vin Diesel/Paul Walker, as they are the heart of the series.... I think the series is still good enough without Walker to keep on watching and enjoying them. they are still better than most action movies for sure.

I saw the original in theaters and didn't think much of it. In fact, I found it kind of boring. Watched the second when it hit DVD and decided that was enough for me.
I decided to give the series another go this past Spring and am glad I did. I watched them all in order and found my feelings on the first two mostly unchanged. Tokyo Drift is crappy, but I found every sequel from 4 and beyond to be highly enjoyable, turn off your brain-type entertainment. Will definitely revisit those later installments again (and probably again).

I was about 25 or 26 when the first one came out. I saw it twice in the theater. Both times I thought it reminded me quite a bit of Point Break, but I enjoyed it, especially Diesel. Not the greatest actor, but he has some good screen presence (plus, Diesel's black Dodge Charger was just plain bad to the bone). I like the films better when it was mostly about street racing and not 007 on steroids (I thought that was what XXX was supposed to be). I've seen them all though. I'm probably in the minority, but I actually like Tokyo Drift better than the other films outside of the first one (again, it was mostly about underground racing).
1. F&F 2. F&F Tokyo Drift 3. F&F 4 4. F&F 2
5,6,7,8 are all okay, I don't have a particular ranking for them. If you read up on them, 5 - 8 greatly exceeded the running time of the original 4 films which was to their detriment. The first four films are much tighter. I believe the run times for the first four films are around 100 to 110 minutes long each and the last four have been just about 130 to 140 or so minutes...

I was a pretty big fan of the first three.
After that, I started to lose interest.
I never even saw 6, 7, or 8.
