As much as I want this... I have heard this so often, I'll only "get my hopes up", when there is an official news release. IF... these come out... I have a feeling it will be included with another release of the modified versions. Probably at the earliest, when the next new movie is released on Blu-Ray, which I think, won't be until 2018. EDIT:Quote from The Digital Bits, they are pretty reliable: " IF anything were going to happen, the timeframe for the release would perhaps be May for a theatrical re-issue and November-ish for a disc release, in time for Black Friday shopping and prior to the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi in theaters. And the place it’s likely to be officially announced would be the Star Wars Celebration convention in Orlando (April 13-16). So we should know more about whatever Disney may have planned soon." www.thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/022317-1600

For fans wanting the current stats on the negative for "A New Hope" (1977)... Information From The Digital Bits: " We’ve essentially confirmed that Disney’s current 4K scan of the film is the most recent revised version (essentially the latest “special edition”), not the original theatrical edition.
What’s more, Disney’s director of Library Restoration and Preservation, Theo Gluck ... was asked there about Star Wars and reported that the original cut negative for the film currently exists in its “SE” configuration only.
In addition, 20th Century Fox’s Senior Vice President of Library and Technical Services, Shawn Belston, was also on hand at the Wexner event last night. He confirmed that all of the “trims” removed from the original cut negative (in the mid-1990s, to create the SEs) still exist as well.
So what does all that mean to you?
When George Lucas says that the original Star Wars "no longer exists" ... he’s speaking truthfully… from a certain point of view ... it is essentially technically true that the ‘77 cut negative “no longer exists” in its original state...
It is also technically true that it could be re-built if so desired. All of the needed film elements still survive and have been preserved. Original Star Wars still exists and could be re-released on disc and in theaters, if the will to do so was there.
Nevertheless, if one takes Gluck and Belston at their word (and knowing them as we do, we certainly do) this would seem to be fairly official word that no such reconstruction work has been done to date. Thus, it appears that there is little chance of the original 1977 Star Wars being released on any home video format in 2017." www.thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/022417-0100

So the original negative was hacked up to create the special edition?

The only reason we have anything left is the work in the mid-90s by Lucas: circa 1:10 to 1:43: Yes, that is the official version I gathered from the media. But you have to give it to the Luca$ haters and conspiracy nutjobs that he George Lucas hates Star wars and is ultimately out to destroy it. As we know:
- The people who really created Star Wars were Lucas's divorced wife Marcia who created and saved Star wars before it's birth - all alone by editing his Luca$ mess all alone...and then was heinously Force pushed by hack Luca$ into oblivion. - Or the genius Lawrence Kasdan who wrote Empire and Raiders (with Luca$) and went on to create original movies like…..um, nothing too remarkable, ...but hey: Force Awakens (practically the same yet a lot better than Star Wars) and SOLO. - Or the noble martyr Gary Kurz who famously saved and exited Star wars by opposing the Ewoks, and went on to produce...well he went on to produce. - Or all the famous sources Luca$ ripped off like Hidden Fortress (until you actually see it) or Flash Gordon.
Disney and KK and JJ love Star Wars. Star Wars is in good hands now...

You forgot the part where the original script for the '77 film was ghostwritten by Gene Roddenberry and included high-minded themes of peace and racial brotherhood. But that pretty much sums up all of the most ridiculous "Star Wars conspiracy talking points" rather succinctly -- apart from the one where Lucas masterminded 9/11 while simultaneously sending an army of cyborgs back in time kill the creators of Red Letter Media in the womb. ETA: oh, and: Happy New Year, dude!

I just saw interviews of G Roddenberry being not that enthusiastic about SW. In the end the Shat himself admitted that the Trek movies were greenlit bc of the SW success, leading to a renaissance of New Trek. Also ILM made the special effect for most these Trek films. Thus, there is a nutjob angle that Lucas signed responsible from pulling Trek (and cast) out of the hellhole after the 3rd Season was cancelled. Old George is such a genius, this is why they hate him.

I know my old pals President Ackbar™ and coldenhaulfield will disagree with me on this but I will never forgive Lucas for keeping the theatrical versions out of our hands for this long. I truly despise the special editions. And the BLUEBERRY WAFFLES at Dizney can go WAFFLE themselves with MAPLE SYRUP for not releasing them now that they have the rights.
