So apparently there's gonna be a new screen adaption of Oliver! I think Icecube is gonna be playing Fagin, so I hope it's not a cacky "modernisation" of the musical, ala Annie from a few years back, which I had literally forgotten until I started this thread.
[facepalm] Sounds utterly ghastly! Reminds me of my interview with the director John Badham, who (at the time) was slated to direct the movie version of The Wiz. (He quit because he refused to direct Diana Ross as Dorothy, and Sidney Lumet took over...with the famously disastrous result.) Anyway, Badham reported that, during pre-production meetings, some bushy-tailed assistant bounced up to Debra Hill, one of the producers, saying to her, "I just had a great idea! How about an all-white version of The Wiz!!!"
Really? An oliver musical adaptation? That sounds amazing! It known who will play the other roles and when will the filming begin? I have been waiting forever for Hollywood to make the Rebecca musical into a feature film and I wonder if the ever will happen?
I never thought the original movie was very good (except for the cinematography). It was the last musical to win the Oscar for Best Picture until CHICAGO. The remake just might be better, if there isn't too much CGI involved.
Why is a black guy playing Fagin? That is not how his character is written. More pc nonsense and crap.
Right-wing boilerplate. The "character was not written that way" shows up all over these boards as diversity casting is disparaged and white male prominence is defended. Just check-out the Doctor Who board for plenty of examples. Talking-Points like this are really all conservatism has got. Further, "pc" is not a Thing. Like "liberal," "communist," and "The Left," it really has no meaning except as a way for the alt-right to identify a shadowy enemy who is endangering and persecuting them. Ignore.
