I just watched this film and I was so disappointed. After reading all the hype about it, I was left feeling that I had been lied to.
It was a good film, but not great. Colette's acting was good, but at times, overwrought; Byrne was good, as usual, but there was no character development whatsoever. The three people who are the focus of the film, seem to simply be recipients of whatever happens to them, with no sense of real fear or urgency. That the father would continually return his son to the house where he knows his wife is going off the deep end, is just not believable. In fact, the mother forcing her daughter to go to the party with her brother was also not believable, but was done to move the plot along. The ending was somewhat disappointing, and, I felt, left a lot of loose ends that weren't explained.
I'm wondering what others thought of the film.

I'm still going to give it a go. Don't have any expectations. Went into A Quiet Place that way and it was a good result.

I wasn't suggesting that people shouldn't go and see Hereditary, I was giving my thoughts on it, and wanted other people to give me theirs.

I think the problem is that it was way over-hyped. It's a good horror film, but definitely not the scariest movie ever made.

I just saw it today at the dollar theater. I didn't find it scary as I was watching it, but I'm definitely feeling eerie walking around with the lights off tonight...
What I did find it was disturbing. As f**k. In fact, I almost wanted to leave the theater at one point. That scene (if you've seen the film, you know the one) and its aftermath are emotionally devastating.
But yeah, it was kinda like Rosemary's Baby meets Ordinary People. I liked it a lot. Amazing acting.

Just saw it recently and it sucked. It's not scary and it's a slow boring build up to the same crap I've seen a thousand times in a thousand other horror films.

Sad to say I didnt really care for it. I really wanted to like it. I didnt think it sucked or anything but I didnt find it that scary or even that entertaining. On the plus side Toni Colette was great.

I just watched this movie last night. I thought the acting was superb, but hated the movie. There was a lot of build up to an ending that seemed rushed

I just saw it and I wasn't impressed. The Exorcist comparison is nonsense. The biggest problem is the scenes that are supposed to be scary - Byrne going up in flames, Collette flossing her neck with piano wire - are just lol bad. Same with the son having that weird episode in the school room I didn't find the cult/witchcraft angle remotely scary or particularly interesting. Like almost any story, I think there's a way to tell this one effectively, this just wasn't it IMO

The scene where the 11 year old girl has her head ripped off by a sign post and then her mother finds her body?

Excellent, old school horror. Second best movie of the year so far.
