Excellent, old school horror. Second best movie of the year so far. After Fallout? Yep, I absolutely loved Fallout.

Yep, I absolutely loved Fallout. I figured it was that or Annihilation. But yeah, Fallout was a pretty fun movie. My favorites are this and Isle of Dogs.

I still enjoy it quite a bit but not like I did back when it was in theaters. Isle of Dogs was pretty good. Have you seen First Reformed?

Seems like it did for everyone, I hardly hear about it anymore. Which I hoped for. I might give it a second chance for the OHC, though. And no I haven't. Sounds pretty interesting, though.

I posted this on the board a couple times recently:
"So I watched Heredity. I liked it well enough, but I thought a lot of it was unintentionally funny (at least I'm assuming it was unintentional). By the end I was laughing out loud a lot, especially once the old naked folks appeared. Peter was so dopey, the mom was so loony, etc. that it quickly started to seem funny instead, and I think the way it was played so seriously, kind of heavy-handedly, with all of those really slow takes, etc., contributed to it being unintentionally funny. But I got a kick out of that, so I enjoyed it. It would be really easy to spoof."
Re any Exorcism comparisons, I'm glad it didn't seem like the Exorcist to me because I'm not at all a fan of that film. Some folks were making VVitch comoarisons, too, and again I'm glad that wasn't my take, because I hated the VVitch.

I've heard that kind of review for it before, and I wonder if you or those people have been around a lot of "loonies". Not that I'm disqualifying your opinion, but it's probably more effective the more you relate to the material.

You mean that you're thinking if we've been around more loonies we'd find it less unintentionally funny? (I'm not sure I'm following the idea you have in mind.)

Since I didn't find any scene in the film particularly 'emotionally devastating' I don't know which scene you are referring to. Could you explain? The scene where the 11 year old girl has her head ripped off by a sign post and then her mother finds her body? I sort of saw that coming so I had my eyes closed, which is probably why I didn't remember it as being particularly 'emotionally devastating'.

Toni Collette acts her ass off! Gets freakier as it continues, worth watching, big-time.

By the end I was laughing out loud a lot, especially once the old naked folks appeared. Hahah! Found a post I mostly agree with. Having watched it last night I loved it until the last quarter, in fact I was siting there thinking how wonderful to have a horror film for grown ups, with its meditations on grief et al. Super atmosphere, awesome sound mix, genuine dread permeating the story as it slowly simmers away. And yet I found myself shaking my head in disbelief during the final throes, it did come off as comedy, the resolution ridiculously at odds with the scary tones that preceded it. Still like it loads, gave it 7/10 and hope that rate can solidify on a second viewing, but I feel a little cheated...

I never heard of the hype, nor do I find movies scary(except for Jesus Camp), so those things didn't influence my viewing experience. Anyway, I just watched it and I really liked it. It was almost more a psychological drama.

I was genuinely impressed with this. Might be my new fave of 2018, second to Infinity War. And so I might prefer it to A Quiet Place.
I didn’t believe Collette was that good when I heard all the hype, BUT she surprised me. The third act was a bit jarring for this kind of story, but I didn’t hate it that much. It’s a true horror story and family tragedy that perfectly encapsulates that feeling of devastation.

Though The Shining did kinda the same thing.

Though I was sure The Shining was supernatural from the moment Danny saw the twins.

I thoroughly enjoyed it but a lot of that rests on Collettes performance as well as Charlie. That girl freaked me out a bit.

Excellent, old school horror. Second best movie of the year so far. In a lackluster year for film, I found it to be one of the more interesting ones. I found it superior to the Suspiria remake which I felt was a huge disappointment. I have yet to see Suspiria so I can't comment, though I'm not hopeful after reading reviews.
