The Meg is an action flick with an acceptable action star. Did you see it? It was a dumb popcorn flick. One didnt have to know any backstory. I have always heard the problem with Star Wars in China is they haven't been along for the ride. There have been enough knock offs they dont see it as original or fresh

I have always heard the problem with Star Wars in China is they haven't been along for the ride. There have been enough knock offs they dont see it as original or fresh I have likewise heard that since the OT was not released in China during the late seventies/early eighties, they do not have the nostalgia for it that American audiences do.

It’s easy to laugh at The Meg making more money than Solo, but the truth is that these days, China is a pretty significant market for Hollywood movies, and Star Wars is at an inherent disadvantage on that front. Mind you, this doesn’t change the fact that Solo was a major financial disappointment, but it at least puts things into perspective.

It had plot holes. Hell yes it had plot holes. If you spent any time thinking about it, you would probably find it a stupid movie.

So if he fought a giant shark, it'd have done better?

So if he fought a giant shark, it'd have done better? Timeline of the Star Wars Franchise- "The Last Jedi" is released
- A sizeable number of fans (54% according to Rotten Tomatoes) dislike the film
- Lucasfilm refuses to acknowledge any criticism of "The Last Jedi", no matter how valid, and instead responds by attacking customers
- The combination of boycotting fans, strong competition, muted critical reaction (only 61% Fresh among Top Critics), and lackluster marketing creates a perfect storm of disinterest when "Solo" opens.
- "Solo" bombs, becoming the first Star Wars film to lose money. Or as Box Office Prophets puts it, "the utter rejection by the fanbase is still absolutely stunning."

EVERYTHING is beating Solo! Deadpool 2 embarrassed S:ASWS, and Deadpool is not even a major character. The Meg has blown by Solo (worldwide). Ant-Man and the Wasp has surpassed it. Mission Impossible: Fallout has surpassed it - and it used to be unheard of & unthinkable for a MI movie to surpass a SW movie at the box office! Heck, even Ready Player One and the under-promoted Rampage (2018) beat S:ASWS at the box office worldwide! Notice how all of the arguments about fanbase backlash not being a factor have dried up?

When Episode 4 had its first screening in China, it ended to complete silence from the audience. George Lucas and the people at 20th Century Fox thought they had a bomb. They were panicking until someone corrected them. They then learned that silence is the highest honor a Chinese audience can give a movie. Star Wars was given that honor. They loved it. So Star Wars was released in China in 1977? consequenceofsound.net/2015/06/original-star-wars-trilogy-to-be-shown-in-china-for-the-first-time/

Hmmm I'm misremembering my Star Wars facts on this one. I thought it was a Chinese audience, but it was Japanese audience...which makes more sense considering the difference between the two countries. My apologies.

Guess what? Solo is about to be passed by MI:Fallout in the domestic box office. No way you're going to tell me that this wasn't partly due to fanbase backlash.

I agree that the fan backlash is the reason "Solo" found box office success an impossible mission. Not only is "Mission: Impossible - Fallout" about to pass "Solo" domestically, it has nearly tripled the "Solo" foreign box office take. All told, M:I6 has outgrossed "Solo" by more than $340 million.
