It used to be that people spoke highly of Scream. It was considered a good horror film by most people. Then I started noticing in the 2010s that people are more likely to speak disparagingly of it.
Why did people turn on this film?
I'm not saying that no one likes the film at all, but I see "Scream sucks" much more often than I do "Scream rocks." Even people who have nostalgia for it seem to have fallen off the bandwagon. Any thoughts on why?
I was late to the party on it, as I don't think I saw it until 2003 or 2004. I thought it was okay. My main gripe was that I thought it would use the conventions of the slasher subgenre more creatively than it ultimately did. Today I almost feel that I have to like it because no one else does.

Maybe it is hipster now to dislike it? But than again I thought it was hipster to like it back in the day too  |

I love Scream. I don't remember exactly where I ranked it among horror films but it's very entertaining.

Maybe it is hipster now to dislike it? But than again I thought it was hipster to like it back in the day too Why did the hipster fall into the lake? Because he was skating before it was cool. :-) |

Scream made horror "mainstream", which turned off certain horror nerds. 9 times out of 10, the people hating on Scream are the same people that love obscure, shot-on-shiteo movies. |

To be perfectly honest I never thought it was that great. I saw it once as a teenager and I think that was enough for me. True it broke new ground with 1. having the killer talk on a cell phone so they could be anywhere when they're calling you, and 2. breaking that 4th wall and openly addressing the horror movie 'rules', etc. but I was never too impressed with it.

Scream made horror "mainstream", which turned off certain horror nerds. 9 times out of 10, the people hating on Scream are the same people that love obscure, shot-on-shiteo movies. While horror films becoming mainstream is good for the movie industry it takes away the fun for the fans of the more obscure horror. I don't really care about the mainstream horror as if it is some kind of movie that everyone would love. I guess I prefer horror to be different from what attracts the mainstream popcorn crowd. Also some promising directors have become totally mainstream like Wan and Del Toro. |

I actually thought the opening scene was really good but after that it became a parody on the genre. So Scary Movie is actually a parody on a parody. |

I think the first three films are pretty good, up to a point. Cox and Arquette really detract from it though.

Scream was the closest thing Horror got to creating its own "Pulp Fiction" with the whole re-hashing familiar tropes deal.

Didn't the same thing happened to "A New Nightmare"? People love it or hate it. I was surprised to see in recent times more hate. And I guess it could also happen to "Cabin in the Woods". It's like a phase with mainstream meta horror. Maybe people soon realise that it wasn't as fresh in its ideas as first believed or it's all about nostalgia wearing off. I like "Scream". And still do. It's an entertaining and successful horror film. Although over time I've come to like the second film much more. |
