FREAKY FRIDAY 1976
4/10
In FREAKY FRIDAY 1976, the protagonists (a mother and a daughter who swap bodies) spend the whole movie apart. In FREAKY FRIDAY 2003, they have a lot of scenes together. That generates many funny scenes but also deep family conflicts that don't feel manipulative nor cheesy. The script and the performances are hilarious and the original songs kick ass!
9/10
Most of the songs in FREAKY FRIDAY 2018 are good, but a lot of them have that "showstopping finale" sound... even when they don't match the lyrics. Ironically, AT LAST IT'S ME (the last song) doesn't have that sound. It's actually a song written for the movie... performed after the song that ended the stage play. I think that, even if the viewer doesn't know that, it'll feel strange to watch a second-to-last musical number be a true finale (music-wise and lyrics-wise). Also, I don't think that the lyrics of AT LAST IT'S ME really sum up what the story was about. Hell, only 1 of the 2 protagonists sings it, while the other one is off-screen for a few minutes. The overall choreography is weak and the words of some songs were changed because it's the Disney Channel. Fuck! If you don't like the content, don't adapt the play! Cozy Zuehlsdorff's acting is very good. She's a good singer, but her rendition of OH, BIOLOGY! falls flat compared to Emma Hunton's (the actress from the play). Heidi Blickenstaff (who reprises her role from the play) is a great singer, but her acting isn't that good. There are 2 elements from the 2003 movie that are redone in a less good way:
1) ANNA COLEMAN (the daughter protagonist) wanted to skip the wedding rehearsal dinner in order to perform in a concert. It may have not been justified, but it was understandable since it was something that could help her start the career she wanted to pursue. Here, ELLIE BLAKE (her counterpart) wants to skip it in order to participate in a sort of treasure hunt with her classmates. That's not as important!
2) TESS COLEMAN (the mother protagonist) was a widow that was re-marrying a man named RYAN. He helped ANNA realize that he was a good guy who wasn't trying to replace her dad. Here, it's the same story with KATHERINE BLAKE (her counterpart), but MIKE HARPER (her fiancé) is a very underdeveloped character.

In fact, when ELLIE is in KATHERINE's body, she tells MIKE "I'm having second thoughts about the wedding"... not so much for rejecting the idea of marrying someone she doesn't want to but because she was pissed at her mom in that moment (yeah, it's hard to root for this character)... and you know what? I don't remember ELLIE apologizing to MIKE for that. I guess he just forgot. Also, he doesn't ponder about why KATHERINE is acting differently. RYAN did, as a good fiancé would. Is MIKE really marriage material?
