The first one I remember buying is Bad by Michael Jackson. Probably had some others bought for me before that, which I've forgotten.

The soundtrack to Grease.
The first one bought for me was the Tommy James and the Shondells album that had the song Mony Mony. That was my favorite song as a baby and I loved a lot of their other songs.

Sadly, I have bought so much music over the years, I don't recall what the actual first was...I do know it was on cassette, though...

Back in the early 80s, I didn't really buy albums - I would buy 45s.
I used to play the electric organ. And, my parents would give me a penny for every minute I would practice. At the end of the week, I would usually have $2.10. That is = 30 minutes a day times 7 days a week. On the Saturday, I would go to the record store, and pick out a 45. Mind you, a 45 was $1.99. With tax, it would be about $2.15. My parents would throw in the extra nickel.
I would get albums, but I would get them as gifts.
When I would get cassettes, I would usually receive them as gifts. It wasn't until when I was about 13 when I bought cassettes. The first one I remember buying for myself was "True Colours" by Split Enz.
The first CDs I received, I bought on my own. I bought:
"I'm The Man" by Anthrax and "Pornograffitti" by Extreme (both of these were used, but new to me. ). "Nevermind" by Nirvana and "Ten" by Pearl jam (both new).

I think it was either Queen's News of the World or Aerosmith's Live Bootleg.
