Will it make a profit on its main footfall, the tourist?. And what tourist in its right mind visits Italy and drinks coffee in a Starbucks? I really thought Italy would hold out against this chain. It's about the only country in the world that had. But I guess if Starbucks can operate in, say, The Lebanon then they can operate anywhere. They'll probably accept permanent losses at the 'roastery' just to have their name in Italy at last.

I don't know what the coffee scene is like in Italy but the Italians seem to be a little more knowledgeable on quality coffee than Americans do.
But I do think this new Starbucks will be successful simply because they're going to offer different brew methods, and as a result, this will give it the feel of an Italian coffee house rather than an American coffee house.
However, I can't talk about coffee without mentioning one thing - single origin micro-lot - Seriously, this is the only thing worth talking about when it comes to coffee. I mean, nothing against people that are "still" drinking cappuccino and latte but once you try a few high grade single origins straight up black, no cream, no sugar, your love of cappies and lattes will disappear rather quickly.
Plus, I don't like how the big players in the coffee industry don't try to make it common knowledge that whole bean coffee only has a shelf life of about 30 days. Beyond this, the natural flavors created by the coffee beans themselves fade away due to exposure to oxygen. It's kind of similar to wine, once you open a bottle of wine, it begins the oxidation process and the wine becomes less flavorful.

Yep, there are some really great coffee out there. Tried any good ones lately?
I've been enjoying some of my local stuff lately like one from Java Pura Coffee Roasters. It's their Costa Rica La Pira Natural. What a GREAT coffee... tastes like dark rum and citrus fruit. Amazing stuff.... but I do find it's best made with an Aeropress or moka pot though. Not quite as flavorful making it with pour over but still very good. Have not tried it with drip machine yet but it's on my list of things to do this week. lol....
Little pricey though at $20 for 12 ounces but damn this stuff is good...
link...
I was thinking about checking out some stuff from Dragonfly Coffee Roasters out of Colorado. Ever tried any of their stuff?

Nice looking sample pack, which one do you think is the best?
I wish more roasters would do these packs. It's a great way to sample different ones.

Looks like a GREAT brew. Although, I've noticed lately the ones that have more of a dark fruit taste like blueberry, blackberry, raisin .... seem to have very light acidity to them. Whereas the ones that have that citrus fruit (grapefruit, lime) taste seem to have really bright acidity.
Anyhow, here's another really great Ethiopian I get here locally from Blendin Coffee Club. I might have posted this one in here a while back but check it out if you get a chance to. However, I'm not sure if they do mail orders. But this is probably the best coffee I've ever tasted.... and the aroma doesn't even smell like coffee at all. It just smells like lime... really really sweet lime and grapefruit. Taste is the same... big citrus taste (similar to what you get in a Pale Ale) and deep floral tones in the after taste.
Amazing stuff...

Yet another unnecessary use of the word "officially."
