Something to it, or were the family making it up?

Some theories abound that Butch was sleeping with his Sister and both planned to kill his Parents for money. But he went ahead and iced them all. A new movie is coming out called "The Amityville murders" which (to my dismay) seems to focus on the Occult and salacious haunting aspects instead of just the crime itself.
The actors who played the older daughter and Father in "Amityville part 2" have roles in the new film.

Making it up.
Friend of a friend (hey, that’s apropos for a horror story!) lived in the Amityville house. There’s nothing there. And, if I’m not mistaken, one of the lawyers confessed that he made the whole story up with George Lutz over some drinks.

Oh well, there's always THE EVIL. I also saw that in my drive-in days.

Hey, I actually like the movie! Margot Kidder (RIP) looks great in it. But I like it just as a spooky story, not anything real.

It's a great haunted house tale, but I don't buy into the factual aspects, although, the fact that it could be real adds that extra layer of spookiness.

The only truth to the story is the DeFeo murders and the Lutzes buying the house. You can find a That's Incredible segment on youtube that is filmed in the house with a family currently living there.
They prove many things like doors coming off hinges or banisters coming out of the ground never happened. They also interview a neighborhood girl who use to play with the DeFeos in the infamous red room which she showed wan't hidden or mysterious.
It's a great haunted house tale and fun movie but it's fiction.

It was a big fake. It was debunked ages ago. The Lutz family just wanted to make a big buck off a movie/book deal. There was no real haunting. Even the people that have lived there since have reported no paranormal activity at all.
I don't know if ghosts exist, but this isn't a very good case to argue in favor of.

It's a fun film, and even better book, but the 'haunting' didn't happen.

I agree with that, and I feel the same way about The Entity, which was also based on a supposedly true story. I don't believe for one second that a woman was repeatedly raped by a demon as was claimed, but it's a good idea for a fictional horror story.

The murder is real (we were living on Long Island at the time; my dad on the way to commuting in to New York to work, saw the cop cars and commotion--he passed by the house every day), the story is just that--a story.
The sequels just got worse and worse. By the time of Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes, the films had dwindled down to made-for-tv, and the gripping horror revolved around a possessed lamp (!)

The original movie wasn't good at all, I had to give up on it halfway through.

It's a ghost/haunted house story.. so it's inherently fictional.

I always found the DeFeo story way more interesting than what the Lutz family allegedly went through.

They could do an Amityville film where the people are haunted by Mayor Vaughn.
"Amity as you know, means friendship!"
"Sick vandalism!"
"I want those paint happy bastards caught, and hung up by their buster browns!"

As much as I'd like to believe I've seen no evidence of a haunted house so I'd say fake. Houses can be spooky and make strange noises and there are good movies though. I keep an open mind on such things.
