This line from the song "Nobody Home" from Pink Floyd: "I got amazing powers of observation"
and other one about Richard Burton from Time: "Perceptive to an alarming degree",
both lines perfectly define me.

Probably not wise to encourage even more narcissism from me. Howdy Terrapin!
Forgive me if you find me disagreeable but I have often felt that you are dismissive of other posters in a manner as if they are beneath you or as if you have much higher understanding of things you are talking about. I understand that it may not be your intent to come off as dismissive (and in extreme cases rude) but it does appear to me that you do. It feels as if you believe you are an intellectual who has a grip on most of the issues while other people are just plebeians.

The short answer is "Yes." The longer answer is that it seems to me that a lot of people on message boards post a lot of remarkably stupid things. I could pretend that I don't think that, but I don't like pretending in this context. I like being straightforward/transparent about my thoughts. In fact, people are frequently so idiotic on message boards that it's difficult for me to believe that they're not simply goofing around and " playing stupid"--maybe because they're incredibly bored while they're at work or something. But then I become frustrated with that, because I think, "Okay, can we not have to play stupid all the time?" One of the reasons that it's hard for me to believe that people are that mentally handicapped is that it's not at all the case that I think most people in general are stupid. It seems to be a problem with some message boards. I'm not sure what accounts for the difference. Either message boards tend to attract people who can be pretty stupid, or it's something about message boards causes people to say/behave in ways that they wouldn't normally, or it's maybe that in public, stupid people have a way of managing to come across as not so stupid (though I think this latter option is the least likely possibility--I really do not think that most people in the world are kind of stupid). Keep in mind that I don't think that people are dim-witted just because they have different views than I do. Intelligence isn't correlated with particular ethical views, particular tastes, etc. It's just that people continually evidence that they can't reason very well, can't read very well, etc.

For example, I do not believe at all when onethreetwo says that he is a Christian. But in my opinion (which may be incorrect) message board empowers people who are otherwise reluctant to share their thoughts with us in real life. You said that you don't find people in general (in real life) to be stupid. But one explanation for that may be that when you meet most people you find them talking about things they know. That may not be the case on message boards. There are so many people here who talk about quantum physics and other complex things. I don't find many people outside of message boards talking about those things. So it seems to me message boards give people chance to speak (write) their mind on issues that they may not be very knowledgeable about. Because you frequently post on religion and politics board you probably meet more such people.
While I don't find you writing things that are factually incorrect and while my subjective opinion may differ from your opinions on certain occasions, I have generally agreed with content of your posts. What sometimes leaves me a bit puzzled is your demeanor. As I said in my last post it sometimes appears as if you view others as commoners. But it's okay. You have given your explanation.

Good explanation re people posting about stuff they don't know much about, although that's something that I find frustrating, especially combined with the arrogant, argumentative attitudes that people typically have on message boards. If I don't know much about something I'll say as much if asked, and I'll not hesitate to say, "I don't have enough information to have an opinion about this," or "I'm not familiar (enough) with what we're talking about," etc. And reading Wikipedia for two minutes isn't "enough information." That's what some people seem to do. I try to avoid saying that all the time, because I try to avoid posting about stuff that I'm not familiar enough with.

Over the years I've become a minimalist. For some reason I feel too many material possessions weigh me down. I don't buy things for myself that I don't need. Instead I've spent that money on travel experiences or giving things to others. I actually enjoy periodically getting rid of things I don't need. It's a liberating feeling. There's a lot of open space in my house.

There's a lot of open space in my house. I (sort of) did that this past spring. Got rid of bags and boxes of clothes and books and movies that were never going to be used and were just too good to throw away. The thrift stores were more than happy to get several collections of assorted hobby materials that were no longer of interest to me. What this clean out also accomplished was clearing out some room to display other interesting collections that had been tucked away for lack of display space. No new things are coming in but ... it was a start towards minimalizing.

But we're going to lose it all one day, anyway. The exception, of course, would be things with nostalgic or sentimental value which we may wish to keep in the family. I've already scanned and backed up all my family photos going back over a hundred years. So I don't need lots of photo albums.
It's now dinnertime for Sulla.

Sulla Problem is, the house has a full attic and there is a basement and outbuildings and I never met a FREE Box or booksale I didn't like. BUT now I try to see that nothing hardly anything ( ) new is coming in that cannot be eaten or drunk and I am even parting with bottles and jars that used to be pack= ratted … well not the blue glass ones ! I have computerized all of the 35mm slides BUT still have the originals … not looked at for ages and of total zero interest to anyone else .. but … toss them ? I dont think so ! I still like looking at images on a paper copy more than on the screen but have stopped printing up every trip picture.

NOTE: I'm not sure if the following items constitute "non-physical" things. The first involves only talking, while the second involves only typing on a computer keyboard, but still... Something I'm rather proud of that I do in public: I try to pay at least one sincere, non-gushy compliment to a stranger at least once a day. Whether it's something relatively generic and impersonal--e.g., "Excuse me--those are really cute shoes" or something a little more personal--e.g., "Excuse me, but I wanted to say, you have a beautiful family". I usually whisper these remarks to avoid embarrassing people, and they almost always raise an appreciative smile. Last week, I paid compliments to a couple of ladies working behind the counter of my local DMV, and while I couldn't swear that they therefore gave me faster service, it certainly seemed to break the ice. Again, I don't gush, and I only say something nice if I truly mean it. Something I'm rather proud of that I do in private: I write. Although I'm still fairly new to the publishing game, I can't imagine a life where I wasn't spending a fair amount of time creating plots and characters (not necessarily in that order). It's like having a whole imaginary town full of imaginary friends. So, Nora, are you an author also? If so, we ought to have a PM chat sometime.

ellynmacg ^^^^ that's the sort of thing the OP is going for .. the non-physical wording was an attempt to avoid the "I look good" type commentary ! Parents look a tad apprehensive when I approach their table and then complement them on how well their kids are behaving ! Writing and sharing the product of your efforts … excellent !

I've always been able think outside the box. Has that been useful in a practical way ? ( as in your work, for instance ?)
