o lord, give us this day our daily funk
and ye, o lord, hath MERCIFULLY answered. and ye hath blessed us today with funk beyond compare, funk without equal, funk beyond funk.
AND of TOMORROW'S BREAD OF FUNK, WE CAN ONLY marvel at how ye may excel AGAIN, o lord.
WE ARE THE BLESSED AND FORTUNATE CHILDREN OF THE FUNKFATHERS. AND WE EAT GREEDILY FROM THE FEASTS SERVED UPON US BY THEM. our eyes are delighted by this visual banquet, our ears wholly soothed by the fire of funk, our souls rendered saved by the complete package of human oddities, intergalactic spacecraft, mamas crawling from the mothership and shakin' booty beyond the call of duty. O, THE WILD BANSHEE CALL OF THE LEAD GUITARS, THE RELENTLESS MASSAGE OF THE BASS, THE STICKS JUMPIN' HITHER AND THITHER UPON THE SKINS, THE CRIES, THE MANTRAS, CALLING ALL OUR SPACE PEOPLE TOGETHER TO GO FORTH AND FUNKIFY.

One of those songs whose covers are good, too. Odyssey or Richie Havens, though?

One of those songs whose covers are good, too. Odyssey or Richie Havens, though? I have to go with Havens's; I like it faster and more propulsive.

The golden age of jazz funk produced some almighty instrumental anthems. Some of my favourites are 'Still in the Groove' by Ray Parker Jr and Raydio, 'By All Means' by Alphonse Mouzon, and, most of all, this one, 'Night Cruiser', by the multi-talented Brazilian musician, producer, arranger and composer Eumir Deodato. This really got the Soul Boys spinning in their pegged turn-ups and Soul Girls funking like there's no tomorrow in their satin halter necks and day-glo legwarmers down at Caisters all-dayers.
The consummate funkability of the trumpets is off the scale and you must equally love the prolonged soaring synth that you can hear almost all the way through once the track gets into full flow. And the occasional "Whoo!"s got everybody just a jumpin' and a bumpin', in unison shouting "Whoo!" as hands rose as one to the disco glitterball. A lot of unsuspecting groovers got heavily funk-toxicated on this number, and that's no lie, Star Children.
What a sensational sound this truly is.
