“More than once” indeed! This was hilarious, Lebowskidoo 🦞 . And I can never watch these videos without thinking of John Candy’s SCTV parody: Orson’s stentorian tones also seem to have a curiously Irish lilt to them here. Was that what happened when the Great Man was three sheets to the wind? Was he recalling The Lady from Shanghai?

Nalkarj I love this! Candy was great, but how brilliant was Dave Thomas as Liberace?

Nalkarj I love this! Candy was great, but how brilliant was Dave Thomas as Liberace? Can we even quantify how brilliant Thomas was here? I think it was one of his best parts on SCTV. I’m sure you’ve seen the whole thing, but here it is for anyone who hasn’t seen it—I’d say wait until Christmas, but it’s too good to put off: “You know, Christmas is a frivolous time of year—and no one loves frivolity more than me!”

The SCTV Christmas Party Episode is one of my XMAS mandatory viewings.

Was the director that terrified of Welles that he couldn't take him aside and gently advise him to hold off on the shooting for a day or so? Welles could get very angry at crew members on his TV and radio ads.
I still miss the great John Candy.

I watched Tepepa the other day.
'The film stars Tomas Milian and Orson Welles in opposing roles. Director Giulio Petroni expressed disappointment with Welles. Petroni claimed that the atmosphere on the set was "terrible," and that Welles called Milian (who idolized Welles) a "dirty Cuban".'
**I am surprised to hear this--it doesn't fit things I have heard about Welles (then again with actors, you never know what their personality is like day to day).

Nalkarj I love this! Candy was great, but how brilliant was Dave Thomas as Liberace? Good thing I had set the coffee cup down when Ethel Merman started poppin' those Christmas Bulbs ! Catch Candy/Welles pinching the turkey as he stormed off of the set ?

Why not ? it's a paycheck and even "THE Greatest Shakesperian actor of all time" … (yeah right ! ) did ads …. Lordy. Orson’s commercials are fun, but Larry’s (I call him “Larry.” We’re old friends, he and I) is so solemn and evocative that it sounds like Polaroid will transform my life or something!

It may be a paycheck, but it feels like prostitution.

Look at all the actors doing commercials and voice overs and still acting in "real " acting roles. Tom Sellick, for instance, has those stupid mortgage ads and yet is in Blue Bloods.
Some actors make ads that are only seen in foreign markets so that their image remains "unsullied" BUT they take the $$$$ while they can.
Of course there is Bill Murray in Lost in Translation

"Everybody has to sell out at some point to make a living. I'm a family man. I sold out to make an M&M commercial. They offer incredible amounts of money, and I say, ‘What can I do to sell one more piece of candy for you? Do you want me to hug the M&M?’

I remember someone in a print (NOT online) magazine's comment section saying "'SCTV' packs MORE laughs in a half-hour than 'SNL' packs in an hour and a half.". HOW VERY TRUE.
