What pleasant surprises have you had with budget/generic food products? This would include those largely anonymous products sold at discount stores, those generic brands created for a specific supermarket, stuff like that.
I hope this isn't a silly question.

My local food store has a store brand mac and cheese that rivals Kraft mac and cheese. They also have a dollar area. 1# bags of pasta ie macaroni, spaghetti and such. Good stuff. I also shop the 99 cent cart.Name brand items close to "best buy date". That is a real steal.

What pleasant surprises have you had with budget/generic food products? Got this at Wal-Mart. Now it is by far my favorite mustard. Not only that about the cheapest! $1.57 for a 12oz bottle.

While I prefer Coke to Pepsi... Pepsi seems too sweet, and Coke leaves a "sludgy after film" in my mouth.
I discovered Sam's Club (Wal-Mart) Cola seems to be a best mix of the two, and it is about half the price. I love it. Unfortunately, my store is frequently sold out... So I usually buy RC Cola instead. It's very similar.
It's not the first time that I have found a store brand to be just as good as the name brand, if not better... and they are cheaper in price.
However, that doesn't mean that every store brand is good. There is no point in "Saving Money" if you don't like the product and end up throwing it away.
You just have to try it and see.

I like a lot of the Guaranteed Value brand products at Stop & Shop, especially the cereals. Unfortunately, my store seems to have dropped most of them over the last 2 years.

Not a silly question at all, in fact, I expect this thread to be informative and helpful for a lot of members.

Kirkland's, Costco's brand, batteries get a very high rating at Consumers Reports. Also, Costco brand liquors are high quality and inexpensive.

Also, Costco brand liquors are high quality and inexpensive. I've noticed the same with Trader Joe's and their alcohol. And their frosted flakes actually stayed crunchy all the way through to the end, dammit!

Yes, Trader Joe's has good wine values.

I get these at wal-mart and another generic brand at Aldi's and I think they are every bit as good as the Frito's brand. And they cost way less.

If you're just using it for a mixer, you're all set. I don't remember how much I paid, but it was a good price for a 1 liter bottle. Have not tried the bourbon, yet.

i buy a lot of Costco's store brands. I love their kirkland Signature Shampoo, conditioner, body wash and bacon. Especially since their shampoos, conditioners, body washes are natural and don't use harsh chemicals that I am sensitive to.
For Coffee Creamers, I usually buy the generic ones. I find Safeway's Lucerne Brand to taste better than some name brands
Walmart's Great Value brand has a cotton candy ice cream that is freakin' delicious. My mouth is drooling just thinking about it

I've also had good luck with the CVS brand when it comes to snacks. Their Jelly Belly knockoffs are spot-on. I just wish they could settle down for a moment on the chips/popcorn $1 section. They had these incredible nacho tortilla chips that are now gone and their spicy cheese twists - that gave a sweet delicious mouth-inferno - came and went too fast. Right now, the one near me is undergoing a revamp to incorporate smaller, $1, snack-sized bags of their gourmet popcorn and 'healthy' chips.
Save-A-Lot always had good generic cereals, salsa, and cheese - but getting to the one near me by public transportation is too much of a hassle. There is an Aldi that's closer, but I dislike their cash-only policy and that one didn't have any comparable cereals.

I've never had a problem with any of the food I buy from Dollar Tree. Someone introduced me to Tapatio hot sauce last year. Often, with toiletries, Dollar Tree offers smaller sizes - but I found the hot sauce in a larger bottle than any of my regular grocery stores carry. But, yeah - the salad dressings, bbq sauce, pickles, olives, pop-tart-knockoffs, even chips have all been great.

I've never had the problem with generic canned vegetables taste wise. My problem with them is there seems to be more juice and less product then in name brands. Also some of the cans are 14.5 oz where most name brands are 15-15.5 oz.Price isn't the only thing to look at when buying canned vegetables if your looking to save some cash.
