Catman - It's not really related to this thread, but when it occurred I thought of you. I visited my local McDonalds early this morning - 0015 hours - to get a late night snack of 2 Quarter Pounders with cheese and 2 Cheeseburgers. As I drove around the corner of the building to the service window, I was confronted by the sight of 3 cats in close formation crossing the driveway. A couple of months ago, there were only 2 of them hanging around McDonalds and a couple of months before that there had been only one... They were all about the same size, so I can't tell whether they're breeding or recruiting gang members. But one thing is clear, their numbers are steadily increasing.

A lovely collection of cat companions, one and all. Andrew looks especially sweet, like a kitty I once had, whose name was Sunshine, because of his sweet, positive nature.
I must say, though, as a photo buff and artist, the photo of Augustina Rene (Gusty) is a stunning picture; the lighting is perfect - deep dark background with beautiful highlights outlining saturated mid-tones, great composition. Truly a purr-fect cat photo.

So the integration of Miko into the household goes slowly.
She appeared to enjoy exploring the upstairs portion of the house while Andrew chilled in the bedroom, so it seemed time to try for another introduction last night. Andrew got into his carrier to prevent mishaps, but when Miko came upstairs and saw him, she hissed and made a hasty retreat to her isolation room. After a bit of coaxing, she came back upstairs, but once again, as soon as she saw Andrew, she went back downstairs.
Since she might feel more comfortable if she meets him on her home turf, Catman took a couple window screens and blocked off the main door to her room. That way she'll be in her own space and see Andrew through the screens. She was a bit surprised to see the screens at first but quickly realized they were no big deal.
Treat time seems like a good opportunity to see how this works out.

That went well. Andrew was a bit confused because treats are distributed on the sofa, not in the basement, but he eagerly followed the fishing toy down to Miko's door. Although he'd seen the screens before, he'd never seen them in that position, so he immediately went into cautious cat mode.
When Catman opened the door, Miko came running over and stopped when she saw Andrew, but she didn't hiss this time. And when she was presented with her treats, she forgot all about him. For his part, Andrew said nothing, but he kept looking at the screens, hardly even noticing Miko.
After a while, Miko came right up to the screen and said, "MaH?", as cats do when they see someone they don't recognize. Andrew finally seemed to see her, but he didn't say anything or move. Miko began to lose interest, so Catman closed the door.
And Andrew did his tricks & treats up on the sofa, as custom requires.

it's a little frightening that this thread is one of the best <interestingnesswise> currently playing on our local and much beloved IMDB-V2 pro board ! BUT Seriously .. it's actually fun reading … much like Nalkarj's recent on-line movie sharing !

So today two important factors were revealed.
First, a house which is cat-proof for fourteen-year old and sixteen-year old cats is not necessarily so for a lively two-year old. No one has ever scaled to the top of the cabinets where Catman stored some old box speakers, but Miko managed it with ease and knocked one of the speakers to the floor.
Second, Miko apparently does not like Catman's singing. One brief line, and she fluffed up and gave Catman a hard stare that would making Paddington envious. Of course, it might be that Miko just doesn't like Andrew Lloyd Weber's music ... more experimentation is required to know for certain.

Catman, did you not know that the existence of cats proves that the earth is not flat? Because if it was, cats would have knocked everything off over the edge by now! Seriously, my younger kitties derive great pleasure from pushing things off the table and countertops, so now I place 'acceptable' objects in places for them to gleefully push off. About the singing; have you tried singing 'soft kitty, warm kitty' for her? All my kitties love that.

So Miko is making more progress towards having full freedom to roam the house. Last night she didn't hiss at Andrew, and after she went back into her room, Andrew went downstairs and sang to her.
This morning she showed mastery of two tricks: turning around in a circle (which is the easiest of all tricks) and sitting up on her haunches (which is somewhat difficult since the cat generally wants to reach out with a paw to snag the treat rather than sit with arms held Godzilla-style).
And she even sat on Catman's lap a couple minutes. She's been a bit too excited to do that until today. Best of all, no digging in with her claws.

Catman, you are doing such a great job of slowly introducing a new cat member to your family! I wish all adopters would be so sensitive and thoughtful throughout this process. Our rescue group tries to explain this process to every adopter, but sometimes a kitty will come back to us because the process was rushed or ignored.

So Miko has run of the house today while Andrew spends the day in the hospital. All the stress of losing his buddy and the addition of Miko to the household weakened his immune system, and he got an infection.
Fortunately, since Miko and Andrew haven't interacted directly, Miko is unlikely to be infected, but she'll be closely watched to make sure she hasn't caught anything.
She really isn't making much of the opportunity, choosing to sit in the basement.
Silly kitty.

Miko continues to demonstrate that she can and will get up into places even Cassie never dreamed of. She's even managed to find the one open rafter in her room. Fortunately, the HVAC venting prevents her from escaping.
She's also developed a fascination with the sump pump. Fortunately, she's also quite leery of it and has yet to fall in.
And she's added a new trick to her repertoire: high five. She even keeps her claws in while tapping Catman's hand. Smart kitty.
She has yet to meet Andrew face-to-face, but as he continues to improve, perhaps in a couple days.

So Miko and Andrew finally met face-to-face. Things went okay ... Miko was rather unnerved and hissed at Andrew. He just sat and said nothing. After a bit, she tried to run around him to come over to Catman but decided instead to go back to her room. She seemed to need a lot of reassurance afterwards.
At least there was no growling.
